I assumed he had too little control over his emotions in the moment. He had just killed his own father and taken a blaster bolt to the stomach. Im surprised he was able to continue fighting. He also probably wanted Finn's death to be more visceral since he was a TRAITOR.
They did a REALLY good job of not making any of the characters look weak in that final fight. Finn held his own. Rey beat Kylo, but Kylo was fucking bleeding out the whole time so it made him look strong that he was still winning nearly the entire fight.

maybe they'll do something interesting with these two characters that will make more sense. Finn's character just felt ridiculously unnecessary though, and he never seemed like he belonged in the star wars universe.
