Would I like this movie if I've hated all of Inarritu's previous work? The trailers look great, the cast is great, and they chose great subject matter. But I'm just afraid that Inarritu will blow it like he always does, and make a pretentious bore with no subtlety.

I liked the unforgiving nature of most of the movie. Leo does a great job but for the most part it's just kind of boring. The opening/ending are highlights, the middle 3rd of the movie drags on much too long.

6.5/10, bumped to 7.5/10 because some of the long shots are incredible.

I like it but I'm a big fan of Inarritu and this different than what he's done in the past but nevertheless it has his signature all over it. It has a strong opening with lots of long shots, the middle is slower and more about the character, with the third act having the characters accepting their fate. The themes of the movie are both about survival and revenge. But if you've hated all of his previous movies and you see them as pretentious then you're gonna find the same pretentiousness here too.

8/10 movie. Perfect camaera work and great editing but the story didn't have that much of an emotional impact on me as I hoped. The acting was great and intense, though. A good maybe great movie but nothing revolutionary.
>>
8/10 the camera work and cinematography and acting were all top notch

Characters were meh but realistic I guess

I found it odd that everyone was so loyal to Di Caprio (other than Fitzgerald of course) to the point where they would kill/risk their own life for him
>>
>>63884613
>I found it odd that everyone was so loyal to Di Caprio (other than Fitzgerald of course) to the point where they would kill/risk their own life for him
I think it was because he knew his way around better than everyone else.
>>

>>
Movie was too long too start, could have been cut down half an hour and been as effective. The first hour is all set up, so we basically see

>10 minute Indian attack
>5 minute of whitey walking
>5 intense minute bear attack
>40 minutes of Leo lying down making down sydrome noises

Got boring, sped up in the middle a bit, enjoyed the part with the good indian dude, didn't really give a shit about Leo's dreams. Shame is took Leo two hours to recover and 15 minutes to get his revenge.

Liked the brutality of the movie, liked the camera work, wished it went along at a little faster pace, liked Tom Hardy, liked Domhall Gleeson, didn't expect him to pull of a gruff frontiersman but he did well - didn't like that fucking kid who looks like Sid from Toy Story, he needs to GTFO out of films tbqh senpai.

I saw the leaked version yesterday.
It was pretty good. I liked the cinematography more than Birdman. There were obvious cuts but there were countless times a scene was a long take and it was so organic.
Some scenes were fucking great and Dicaprio is a genuinely good actor. The climax scene near the end was also some nice "outfucking skilled" moment.
My main problem with the movie is the visions of the main guy were too frequent unlike in Biutiful. There were also two scenes involving his dead wife floating around which looked downright silly.
I liked it more than Birdman but not as much as Biutiful
>>
I liked the movie. A bit too drawn out though and I didn't like how some characters ended up. Especially Domhnall Gleeson, made no sense to me desu
>>
>>63884613

i dont think it was the fact they were loyal to him but more just loyal and honerable in general. they would do anything to not leave a mate behind, and when they found out one of their own betrayed another one of their own they completely dissowned him.

Did anyone feel the whole indian guy looking for his daughter subplot to be a bit underdone for the length of this movie? What did it actually accomplish? Did they need some way to make the white man evil instead of just having the indians want to steal the pelts and sell to the french? She really had no purpose and the scene where glass stop the guy from raping her feels rushed and underdone. Nothing would have changed if you removed the daughter besides maybe the ending?
>>
>>63885310
It doesn't help that animation is shit tier in terms of variety.
I was shocked at first but as time passed I realized "Yeah the oscar would probably go to Pixar. I mean shit like Despicable me and the like are just mediocre".
If Peanuts was nominated I probably won't watch it since I never really fucking cared for Snoopy and all reviews are basically saying "It has obvious issues but hey your kids won't notice them."
>>
>>63884613
>Characters were meh but realistic I guess
I know what you mean. It's a double edged sword really. If it was any other "Movie" character, Leo would be constantly talking to himself screaming MUH BOY however in this he acts like more like a human being. The only true character in this was Tom Hardy and that Captain guy who both played their roles perfectly in the story.

If someone shoots an arrow in your face you will die

A lot of characters fall down after being shot, I don't think we see anyone die instantly from being shot in the chest or what have you, e.g. Fitz is shot in the final encounter and keeps going for quite a while

Modern weaponry is meant to maim

>>
>>63885586
Forget arrows, you can take a bullet to the face and still keep kicking for a while. All depends where it lands.

I think you see a few guys get insta-killed throughout the boat scene but in fairness, it's a movie so who really cares about it. Come to think of it I can really think of a modern movie which deals with weaponry, death and medical treatment realisticly outside of war docuemntaries
>>
wish i watched in theaters/10
>>
>>63885767

So the whole point of the Injun plot was to get the cannister back to the camp so the rest of the expedition would know Leo is alive?

Why did the Frenchman even bring them the cannister? Wouldn't he have his own? Why would he make a point to show them?

very nicely shot but as far as dicaprios character it felt like the director payed the recent tomb raider games and thought "hey i wanna do that shit in my film!".
i just couldnt stop cringing at all the ridiculous shit he kept surviving
>>
>>63886005

My biggest gripe was when he fell off the cliff. Everything up to there, sure, whatever. Maybe he dried off and survived hypothermia after being in the river, maybe the bear didn't crush every bone in his body, maybe all his wounds didn't get infected and he didn't get gangrene.

But he fucking fell off like a 50 foot cliff and his wounds miraculously DIDN'T all reopen and his bones somehow didn't break and he was able to get up and sleep inside a horse. All of this happens after avoiding getting hit ONCE by like 15 chasing indians, all shooting at him.

That shit was stupid.
>>
>>63885952
the movie looks beautiful at times, I'd just like to see it more clearly and on a larger scale.

While I don't doubt that a lot of it was retouched with cgi. From what I read about the movie was that it was very difficult to make because the director wanted to use as much natural lighting as possible and the actors having to withstand the cold, which implies they were actually doing a lot of shooting in the wilderness.

What's the point of shooting in all natural lighting if you're just going to fuck it up with ugly grey colorizing in post-production?

The look is appropriate to the action in the film

I didn't understand the last scene. Did Glass become a Jedi at the end of the movie? Is that why he saw the ghost of his wife?
>>
>>63890681
Well he did gut a horse and hide inside it to survive against a blizzard like Luke
>>
2/10.

It is phenomenally terrible. Like, I knew that Inarritu is a bad director, but I thought maybe this movie could work, with a simple story and such great cinematography. Except Inarritu did literally everything wrong, from the cheesy and unbelievable B-movie screenplay to the disappointing lack of suspense or any kind of grippiness in the scenes where Leo DiCaprio "survives" on his own due to there being cuts every 30 seconds to other characters or to Leo himself at a rapidly progressed point.

8/10, couldn't understand a word Hardy said though

at least you got dubs
>>
I liked the movie's atmosphere and setting but leo really came off as trying hard to get that oscar. Half the movie was leo crawling through snow breathing hard. All the other characters were good though.

This.

>>63886005
You do know the real Glass actually survived ridiculous shit, right?

The director and DP go on and on about nature, and wanting things to look "real". If that's the case, give us natural fucking color, not the same tired, hamfisted "mood"-infusing grey/blue/orange bullshit you see in so many modern dramas.

7/10.
Took the womb symbolism too far. Man crawls out of one womb, that's interesting. Man crawls out of two wombs, that's a bit much. Man crawls out of three wombs...goddaamnit.

Rather watch Seraphim Falls.

W-Why would a bear rape him?

Srs question.
>>
Was he a race traitor tho ?
>>
Even if it is a screener, this is hands down the most beautifully shot movie of the year.

Unfortunately, the story and characters aren't as good.

This is 11/10 visuals with 6/10 everything else.
>>
>>63874953
He'll definitely get a nomination and I'm bold enough to say he could potentially get the win. Leo will go home empty handed.
>>
>>63891835
If there is a personalized code, it is hidden. There's only one on-screen for your consideration watermark at the halfway point on the Blu Ray

Am I the only one who likes this kind of shit? Especially when water droplets are on the camera lens.
>>
>>63886094
Fully fucking agree.

They took the concept of plot armor to new highs on that scene.

>inb4 tree broke his fall.
He would still be back to near death state.

it's a 9/10. brilliant fucking movie. brilliant fucking movie. and yeah, the Brit took it. Matt Hardy owned it. Leo acted superbly but Matt was a slimy snake throughout. is it matt hardy or tom hardy. anywho, the nigger from star trek nemesis, yeah him, what a slippery punk.
>>
how did his leg recover so fast? how did all those injuries from the bear attack didn't get infected? how does he not get a fever for riding down the river in below zero temperature?

>Matt Hardy owned it. Leo acted superbly but Matt was a slimy snake throughout. is it matt hardy or tom hardy.

Matt Hardy is a wrestler; Tom Hardy is an actor.

You're dad has good taste.
And he will certainly like this.

>>63887870
Switch Leo and Hardy's characters and you'd have a much better movie.
