In novelization there's a plot about Leia's emissary Korr Sella, who was sent to Hosnian system to warn the government about The First Order using military force on neutral system of Jakku. She's pretty much frowned upon and ignored, because nobody likes Leia as she is a daughter of Darth Vader. And then, out of nowhere, TFO destroys the planet.
It's a nice, simple and straightforward buildup, shame it got edited out of the movie.
