I think Kylo Ren was extremely weakened at this point. Both from his shot to the gut from the bowcaster, and from his inner turmoil after he killed Han. He is still struggling with himself and feels a pull the the light side, and directly after killing his father his powers with the dark side are weakened. He keeps hitting his wound trying to draw power from his pain, because he knew he might be in a bit of trouble at that point in time, even against untrained people like Finn and Rey.

Nice. Rewatching the scene reminds me why I liked the duel in this movie. It's actually pretty well done and the swings and sabers themselves feel like they have weight and can do damage unlike the prequels where I felt like they were fighting with flashlights.

They had actual, physical props for the swords this time instead of just antennae to guide post-processing. Even the glow they emit into the surroundings is a practical effect, not something added in post-production.
