>"Tom Cruise showed up on the set one day, just out of the blue. I mean literally, he came down in his personal gyrocopter. He put it into automatic landing mode and jumped out 300 feet in the air in a bright orange wingsuit. At this point the entire crew had stopped what they were doing and were just watching Tom Cruise do wingsuit tricks around his descending gyrocopter. Once he finally landed 5 minutes later he strolled right up to the director's chair and vigorously pumped JJ's hand up and down, up and down for 20 straight seconds. I don't really know how exactly the exchange went but Tom eventually leaped into the air and shouted "YES" while pumping his arm, like a shot a sitcom would end on. Then he bounded off to the costume trailer, knocking over a couple interns on the way.
Now here comes the really crazy part. Tom didn't need to rehearse anything, and he even brought a 'prop' of his own to the set. That was the electronic baton that appears in the final movie. Turns out that was actually a gift from the Church of Scientology, it's used in an elaborate ritual to enhance your thetan level. At least that's what Tom said while he was twirling it around. JJ only had to give him a couple lines of direction: 'You're angry at this traitor' and 'Make sure you lose in the end". Then he just went at it with John Boyega, who had at that point had already had some stunt combat training. But Tom didn't need any. The final scene is done in one take, but there were some parts when John got hit too hard and needed to stop that were edited out. He was exhausted at the end, he had to take a five minute breather. But Tom was already planning out the next 5 scenes he wanted to do, and he wrecked a good part of the set twirling the other stunt weapons around that he wanted to use."
