Kylo Ren is easily the most compelling villain in the entire saga. Maul on the other hand is a non-character.

Ren was bad ass until he met his match and killed his daddy. Hes not a complete villain, obviously, and has some serious angst issues. Besides, the best villains in TFA weren't even force users - Hox AKA Hitler and Phasma AKA Nazi Dominatrix gave the New Order an evil feel that didn't require an over the top sith lord to prop up. This movie intentionally is setting us up for whatever plot twists and character developments in the next one.

One of the better things about Kylo that a lot of people seem to be missing is he was actually letting his rage take over. He as purely motivated by his emotions.
You never saw Vader get that angry (at least from what you see in the movies) and Ol Palpy was the same, he never let his emotions guide him, which is what the dark side is all about.
Seeing his face like you said made you connect with him because he is in fact human and flawed, but his rage consumed him.
