Groening wants to beat Gunsmoke's episode count. He has 52 episodes to go which would be put the show in season 30, which would also be a nice round number to end it on.
Not saying that's when it'll end, but that's the bare minimum they're holding out for.

The show went down quickly after Oakley and Weinstein left, and then got even worse after Scully left and got replaced with Al Jean.
S11 is the last season that's really worth watching. After that, there's maybe 12 episodes out of 16 seasons that are 'good', and they aren't good in the same way that the old Simpsons episodes were.

A lot of the decline started earlier. There were zombie simpsons episodes in the tail end of season 8.
6-7 were good and even "classic" seasons in my opinion, but the signs of decline were there, however small they were.
I remember when the first episode aired. I'll die before the simpsons. :(
