Luke is shown to be proficient at repairing droids (mechanic), a skilled pilot (and a crack shot), and force sensitive. Really the only thing he lacks is melee skills and the ability to understand more than one language (which again, even if he did it isn't really something to gripe at).
I fully agree that Rey is a Mary Sue and that her combined prowess at everything, especially lightsaber combat and force usage, is ridiculous.

So we can calculate that the cost of replacing our -current- use, assuming zero growth for the time it takes to make it (a practical impossibility) puts the -lower- estimate cost at 29.22 trillion dollars. Even if other sources replaced half the grid, that's still 15 trillion dollars.

Similarly, Rey obviously had training with that staff of ra thing. She learned to defend herself on Jakku from asshole scavengers and thieves, so she knows how to fight.
Plus, Kylo Ren was injured. He'd gotten shot in the stomach, and they made this incredibly obvious that he really shouldn't have gone after them but did because he's obsessed with Luke. The only reason they even stood a chance against him was because Kylo Ren intentionally fought them at a disadvantage.

I don't know how people keep on forgetting that Kylo was shot with Chewie's Bowcaster right before his duel. You know, the Bowcaster they spent a lot of time establishing was extremely powerful. Yes. Luke isn't shown to be anything more than an amateur with droid maintenance. He knows enough to get by with the equipment available on the shithole planet he lives on. His flying skills are impressive, but there's still tension and a feeling of real danger in the dogfight scenes. He would have been killed if Han hadn't had a change of heart and come back to save him. And he was mostly clueless on how the Falcon works and needed it to be explained by Han because it was an unfamiliar type of ship and he was also new to hyperspace travel.
As for Luke's force training, it was a bit rushed, but nowhere as bad as Rey's. There's actually character development and his force mastery feels like an accomplishment. Throughout the entire OT even as Luke becomes more skilled it's reinforced that he still might not stand a chance against Vader and fighting the Emperor would be suicide.

Luke's force ability wasn't Rushed at all and in fact the only reason why he got as far as he did was because of his Force potential being the son of Anakin and stuff. And still he sucked at it. when that abominable snow man wanted to it eat him, it took him several frightening moments to call his saber to him. vader pushed his shit in and by the third movie Vader wasn't even trying to hit him like he was before. Vader was conflicted. The only time Luke became OP was when Vader pushed that Leia button and then Luke realizing his error threw down his saber and became the pacifist.

I bash on Max as much as anyone else on /tv/, he did many shit scripts, sold many to cheap directors, and he has a talent to get a shit cast on every movie he pens. He is an attention grabbing whore too, ridiculous looking at that, and this is no exception.
But overall, he's right on the money in his video here. He has a pretty good analysis on how Rey is over the top OP compared to Luke himself, and how silly and out of place this feels in a star wars movie. I still hate him though, but for once even I will admit that he is right about this.

Fuck that. This is just bad writing to save the hero without actually explaining it.
The prequels at least had the sense of explaining character being defeated thought the actual fighting. Whenever a character won was because he earned it. Whenever Akanin and Obiwan won a fight was because they were simply better than their opponent. They also had years and years of training.
Rey by comparison is a fucking wonder kid who can flawlessly pilot the millennium Falcon and outmaneuver tie fighters through the innards of a star destroyer. That was the first time she ever piloted the Falcon.
But the very fact that her knowledge of the force without having actually go through any actual training or meditation completely erases the mysticism that the force had. The force is only usable by those who have mastered their emotions and learned some semblance of self knowledge. Rey doesn't seem any wiser than anyone else and her powers of the force are completely not earned.
At the very least Kylo Ren is conflicted about himself, which would indicate that he's currently trying to achieve some form of self control or knowledge. Rey goes through no character arc and therefore she hasnt the knowledge to properly control the force.

She doesn't even need to win him over, not only does he love her unconditionally but she also knows his own ship better than he does and is a better pilot than HAN FUCKING SOLO. He's probably viewing it through a writer's eye. If the script leaked and I read it before seeing the film, I'd think it was shit.
But the actors, special effects, and music were top-notch, so overall I really enjoyed it. The plot was easily the weakest part, and a lot of the dialogue could have been awful if it wasn't for good acting.

I was only familiar with Boyega before this, from Attack the Block. He did a decent American accent (as far as I could tell) and he made the quippy lines work for me.
Isaac oozed charm and I want to watch more films with him in.
Driver was great for the kind of character he was playing. I cared more once he took off the mask.
Ridley was fine, at least at first. Her general standoffishness was risky, since it could have made her unlikeable. Instead it was the Mary Sue bullshit that made her unlikeable. Not really the actor's fault.

JJ is a very good filmmaker ....he handles action, dialouge, and character very well. But, he has no patience for logic or depth or originality.
The first half of Star Trek 09 was excellent. Fun, likable, exciting.....really almost perfect. Despite the face, maybe even correlating with it, Driver has a really good body for movie villains. Tall, skinny, and broad shoulders means they can cover him with whatever costume they want and he won't look bulky -- imagine how fat Bane would have looked if he wasn't half-naked for most of the movie -- and his height and shoulder width mean he has an intimidating silhouette. He could probably do very well as a character actor on the side of his more serious stuff.

I see your point, but we'll see a third major collapse before running out of energy sources. Every collapse is going to be less catastrophic than the previous, yes, but we'll still see a compression and that will force people to further develop the renewable, local energies that will be almost certainly be greatly improved on in the time before a collapse.
