Sicario thread.

Thought it was great.

I liked it but blunt's character had zero ground to stand on and I don't get who would actually sympathize with her point of view. Who watches this movie with as naive of a mindset as her character has? Why does she act so petulantly? There is plenty of logical shit for her character to get upset about but she only cares about "muh procedure"

It was fun watching cartel get fucking rekt tho, I liked how it showed how one sided of a fight it would be if the US actually gave a shit about the border.
>>
>>63823873
I thought Blunt's character was great!

Think about it, she was the total opposite of a Mary-sue, in fact... she behaved exactly how a woman in her situation would... she complained a lot, didn't get the big picture, and even accepts at the end that this war is too tough for her!

I would rather have that then some unrealistic female super soldier type that hollywood seems so desperate to force down everyone's throats these days.
>>
>>63824055
She was still a non-character. She should have just been a straight up window for the viewer rather than almost having half assed opinions. I don't enjoy depictions of women being weak idiots regardless of how realistic it is or isn't, because it isn't enjoyable to watch to me. She shouldn't have been a super soldier, I'm just asking that she be a little bit more sympathetic in her wet-blanket-ness, cause she was written like she with a fucking middle-school understanding of politics. There are plenty of valid complaints for her to have too "you put our lives at risk just so you could use us as a beuracratic liscense to do shady shit" should have been #1 on her list of grievances, but instead she seemed more concerned with other shit that she had trouble articulating.

Beause she's from a tactical unit where operations are planned and executed with meticulous detail and everyone is made aware of the facts and can trust each other.

Then on her first day on the job with the new guys she gets dumped in another country and nearly shot in the back of the head because everyone just decided to hop out of the cars and give up their perimeter security to light up the burrito vans to either side of them in full view of the public like a bunch of uncoordinated savage retards.

>there are people unironically siding with the titular sicario

This was literally Zero Dark Thirty: Mexico. I have no clue how you could come away from it thinking otherwise

Great movie, though the face to face confrontation kind of stood out like a sore thumb, and it never seems to address the comodification of family that's so pervasive in the world it's exploring
>>
How come Emily Blunt doesn't get the Feminist Praise like Furiosa did? She's a strong, independent woman who actually kicks ass and is the voice of reason without being a mary sue

I don't get it
>>
>>63824336
She was a fish out of water, That's the point of her character.
>>
>>63822989
One of my favourites, but it's nowhere near a perfect film. I feel it jumped the shark towards the end, when Del Toro becomes The Ultimate Operator
>>

Because autists only cared about the mad max label.
>>
>>63824336
I see where you're coming from, but consider that the existence of her character is a vessel meant for deconstruction in the kafkaesque and odious world of the border. It's fair to dislike her for her lack of presence, but I feel that this choice was meant to serve as a rorschach test for the viewers own hazy view of the dark world that the special forces team descends into. That is to say, that this world is an aggregate of twisted motivations beyond moralistic understanding.

>>
>>63824559
This. I mean his competency was never in question, but the sit down at the dinner table with the little expository speech and the first-standoffish-then-fearful arch enemy felt like the climax from a luc besson popcorn revenge movie instead of the tense, methodical thriller that preceded it

That was almost as bad as the last hour of Prisoners. Why can't this guy just make a good, consistent movie?

And have to deal with the corpse of a high ranking FBI official who probably left a note of where he was going and what he was "doing"?

I don't think so. She's not smart enough for that.

And if we want to go into moralistic reasons (which I believe suit her character to some degree), then I propose that she may have relented out of some desire to cease the bloodshed after being surrounded by it for the whole movie. But this notion is intensively personal; the violence will continue regardless, as is evident in the final scene.

Pretty good overall, but have to agree that Macer dragged the film down. She was very clearly a 1.5 dimensional naive character meant to appeal to more casual film goers who need super unrealistic melodramatic things like a by-the-book rookie punching her boss in the face, and having to be told to live in a small town where law enforcement is black and white.

So all that was a little plebby, the the film otherwise did a pretty good job with its subject matter and story, Brolin was very good, and Del Toro was great.

>consistent undermining of the protagonist

I think that's a generous way to put it. She just felt very much like a "movie character" in an otherwise seemingly more realistic movie. It didn't feel genuine for a legit FBI agent to be so surprised again and again at how ugly and ambiguous fighting cartels is. Her character and reactions were too simplistic and verging on cliched/predictable. Punching her boss was just stupid. That's straight "this is clearly a movie and not real" type of shit.

And none of that is necessary. The film didn't need an unrealistic naive/idealist main character to achieve any of its goals. If the character was meant to help contrast strict law enforcement/morality with the more ambiguous, dirty way of dealing with cartels, they could've figured out a better way to do that than use a lame main character.

I suppose you could say parts of the ending action were "plebby," but they were also simply a part of the entirety of the operations the film was trying to show. Sometimes, an operative will invade a compound and shoot a "jefe" and his family. It's part of this new type of law enforcement.

But overall, good movie still.
