Now that I thought about it, it makes sense that Poe exists. Finn is not a pilot, and Rey has inherited the Millennium Falcon and as such is unlikely to get into an X-wing. We NEED a named X-wing pilot in the story, if only to sell toys.
Poe ended up being one of my favorite characters in Episode VII. He didn't have much to do, but he was fun to watch in everything he did.

Not him, but I think the point that anon is making is that TFA plays with the idea of who's going to pick up the Luke mantle (and lightsaber) and become the next Jedi hero. Finn seems like the most immediate candidate because of how the movie ads showed him with the saber, but ultimately its a red herring and Finn comes off as a weird (in a good way) mix between Han and Luke, with aspects of both.

He's relatively incompetent. Both lightsaber fights he's in he loses. He's a meh shot. He constantly tries to run away. The biggest hero thing he did was shut down the shields and that was more because the clone troopers apparently value their lives above protecting their death weapons. They both made it out alive against the odds, odds that were far worse than most military operations. It was a daring, crazy plan. Finn had no reason to believe Poe had lived. Plus they would both have been amped up from the battle at Maz's Castle. I had no problem believing their reunion.
