Luke was a bad teacher. He never truly understood the light side of the force. He only had a very, very basic understanding of it's morals and teachings, because both Yoda and Obi-Wan had very little time with him. Luke was a last ditch effort to exploit a weakness in Vader, they just taught him enough to keep himself from getting killed.
Ben wanted to take his education seriously, and with Luke only teaching him how to swing a saber and telling him to have blind faith in a power he doesn't have a proper understanding of, he was turned over to the dark side by Snoke, who actually knew how both sides of the force worked.
Kylo is obviously very conflicted on what side he should be on. After fully learning the truth from Snoke, he knows that the light side of the force is the correct one, however the dark side is his only chance at a proper education and power.
It's obvious he'll turn to the light side eventually, maybe even VIII. He's just a scared, lost kid who got in with the wrong crowd but can't get out.

Most are exposed to him for the very first time and he's an easy target since he has very apparent facial features that are easy to bully.
He grew up and experienced how people react to his looks. Usually, people develop a thicker skin and depending on their character, even learn to adapt and react with a healthy attitude, like he did when he makes jokes about it himself (assuming what you said is true and he did it in a still self-respecting manner).

He actually looked a little bit like Harrison Ford in the movie, a convincing son of Han Solo. The make-up department worked wonders on his mug.
It's obvious that he was not cast as being menacing or scary, his character is insecure and frail. Driver's performance was the best in the film in my opinion, he's very obviously going to end up going through a ridiculous redemption arc and not be the main antagonist in the long run.
