There's a reason he's only published in NY art magazines and the like, he's not a film critic in a traditional sense of the word. He's looking at them like art pieces, which is why he pulls seemingly random symbolism and themes from cultural trash like Adam Sandler movies and Taken sequels. He's not reviewing them as narrative pieces but as art instillations, the symbolism and themes and so on come first and the fact that it's an actual movie comes second.
He's basically not even a film critic, he's an art critic who happens to review film. That's not a criticism, but it also means that the memes around him are stupid and 99% of people should happily ignore him because he's not even doing the same thing other critics. Finn wasn't the Han Solo derivative, that would be Poe. The irony is that he has character when everything in the Star Wars universe dictates that he shouldn't. Why is he, amongst doubtless thousands with a similar backstory, the only Stormtrooper we know of who resisted the human programming of the Imperial army? Why was this not detected before he was sent on his first assignment? We know nothing of what that conditioning is like, so his ability to immediately feel doubt about committing acts of evil from the get-go feels in no way special. His act of rebellion has soft impact. Usually, when an exploited minion of evil casts aside their allegiance, the audience should feel glad and vindicated in rooting for the good guys. Finn does not evoke that feeling. The fact that he's a deserter Stormtrooper, an extremely unique occurrence, is just exposition. He is not more impressively designed than Lando or Mace.
Also, The Force Awakens was the single worst paced Star Wars film to date. It gives ample time to nothing, it gives buildup to nothing.
