Was John asleep behind the wheel? Why even have him score it?
>>
There's Rey's Theme, and several additional motifs.

For the most part though, what do you expect from a movie that was built around being a massive nostalgia grab?
>>
>>63809491

There was a memorable new main theme though. Even though I'd never heard it before, I could tell immediately the first time it played that this was the song of the movie.

Of course, people like you are too stupid to notice. Then in a few years after getting it drilled into your skull you'll consider it a classic.
>>
meme theme lmao
>>
The only 2 new themes that I noticed were Rey's theme and a theme at the Resistance base.
Both weren't really that memorable though.

That's something to consider too. He might have reused a lot of music, but it was still like, your stand two deal. Ennio Morricone did music for The Hateful Eight, and he only wrote about 30 minutes.

Grandfathered in. Lots of good composers turn in shitty work when they are under no pressure to stand out. See Zimmer.

If he were only known for SW, Disney probably would've dumped him.

If you watch williams in interviews, he truly has a deep love for his craft. I thin he's just old and may leave a lot of the work to his assistants.

The music may not be memorable but it all had that Williams feel to it, which counts for something.
>>
Even this was more memorable than anything in the new score.

The man was alive during World War II. The average 83 year old is sitting in a home pissing their diapers, but this guy is writing music for a film that's gonna gross over a billion dollars.

Listen to this. He copied heavily from it for A New Hope.

Yeah yeah and he stole bits from Holst's The Planets
Big whoop, far more famous composers than him regularly used to steal chunks from others

That's just how film scoring works.

You can call this the pleb choice, but I still think it's one of the best pieces of film score from the last twenty years.

This alone justifies Phantom Menace existing.

That's because for some odd reason they decided to "hide" the music behind the action scenes and all. If you listen to them, you'll see they're really good, but you don't remember most of them when watching the movie because they were "hidden"

There's nothing better than hearing Corn on the kobb when Darth Maul and Obi fight.

>>no major defining themes from TFA

>Rey's Theme
>Resistance theme
>Kylo Ren has 2 motifs

could've sworn Finn had a theme too but I've only listened to the soundtrack once.

not Williams' fault JJ didn't give the film any time to breathe with the racing pace and there's little room for the score between the large amount of dialogue and sound FX.

Music tends to be mixed a lot quieter in movies than it used to be in decades past. Barring your Hans Zimmer, where they'll mix his music so loud chances are you'll blow your ear drums out.

The best thing about Williams threads is there are always those few people with ankle deep knowledge of music who come in and haughtily post how he quoted Holst or what have you in his music.

No fucking shit. Do you know how film scoring works? Tracking? A director or a higher up will literally sit down with you, show you a scene, play a piece of music, and tell you to write something that sounds like that.

It's just part of the business.
>>
>>63811642
This was for sure the stand out musical number for me in this Star Wars. Watching those X-Wings coming in across the lake to fuck up those Imps was great.

Rey's theme was pretty good too. I can see it getting more pronounced and harder in the next two movies.
>>
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=65As1V0vQDM

Rey's theme is great.
>>
>>63811642
Reminds me of KOTOR
>>
There were some good themes, but the battle music was completely uninspiring. Especially compared to Battle of Hoth or Battle of Yavin (the latter of which is just the main theme repeated 50 times over with different variations).
>>
>>63810009
kek underrated post
>>
>>63809491
Rey's Theme is actually pretty good.

I don't know what everyone is complaining about, the soundtrack is pretty good. Not as good as the soundtrack to the prequels but pretty good.
>>
>>63809491
Anyone notice that March of the Resistance is a revamp of the Separatist battle theme and a little bit of the Imperial March, but then revamped to sound heroic?

Is there pottery in that? Does it mean anything for the future films?
>>
>>63809491
No Brendan x Williams shop? /tv/ you disappoint me more and more everyday, but what am I saying, all those star wars threads are by and with redditors
>>
>>63819594
There's nothing JUST about Williams though.
>>
>>63817961
you got to be kidding, nothing memorable or great about this.
>>
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6snRTlOOw7Y

Rey's theme was great and unique, and I really loved the trailer theme. The rest was basically John Williams ode to Star Wars because shocker... it's a Star Wars movie.

Also this movie had no place for something like "Anakin and Padme Theme" because they didn't have to include 20 minutes of exposition and stiff acting to establish relationships. THANKFULLY.
>>
/tv/ is full of plebs without vision, what a surprise.

Just let the music settle in, there are memorable melodies in it. Also take into consideration that since there are melodic motifs linked to certain characters and events, and these events and characters haven't fully developed, as a consequence these motifs haven't been fully developed yet.

I'm sure certain melodies in TFA will gain more weight when they are emotionally linked to events we have yet to see in Episodes VIII and IX.
>>
>>63820647
Crossing my fingers that Williams lives long enough to write that material.

I mean I know it seems morbid, but they're planning two year intervals for VIII and IX, right? That would put the guy at 87 by the time that's done.
>>
I remember there being a dusting First Order march, but I couldn't tell you how the melody went.
>>
The big ones I noticed were Rey's theme, the Starkiller/Kylo Ren violins, Snoke's theme, and the Resistance theme, but none of them has a very memorable melody.
>>
>>63820701
8 is meant to be out midyear 2017, 9 some point in 2019
>>
>>63820135
Heh, give it time. It'll become a fan favorite.
>>
>>63820923
Yep. I know Morricone's still at it at 87. Just hope Williams can keep on powering on through.

Wouldn't be surprised though if we saw some ghostwriting from another composer in the next two movies.
