The Master is PTA's attempt at outing poseurs by making something utterly disjointed that vaguely resembles a narrative feature just enough that it confuses them into praising it out of fear for being labelled a pleb.

An intentionally terrible movie carefully emulating a masterpiece. A true work of genius. Why do you think the plot of the film involves a cult leader who feigns insight and brilliance but is secretly full of shit? It's a metaphor for the film itself.

tl;dr if you think The Master is actually good you're a "pleb" . Stick to your star wars threads

The Master is literally a rorschach test about the human ego, and man's need for commitment and vice in a simultaneous paradox. It only means the ideas you bring to it. It's basically PTA using free-association therapy on his "cult".

But yeah, nice meme bro.

Right away I get a feel for a certain type of movie the anon is into and feel I can safely reccomend things like Ashes and Diamonds, Ivan's Childhood, Paths of Glroy and Skammen
But at the same time he's into Hollywood golden age stuff like Lawrence of Arabia and cheesier pictures like Golden Eye and Rocky, so I could also suggest The Great Escape, Stalag 17 etc.

It's great

The visual metaphors and imagery were just magnificent, and I thought the characters were very interesting. The writing, all the little anecdotes that made up the movie were fascinating to me, and seeing Seligman and Joe talk for nearly 6 hours about all kinds of shit was just captivating. I watched the extended cut of both volume 1 and 2, and I'd love to see even more sometime.

The ending was odd to me for a while before I really thought about it and how much it made sense, and it really solidified it as one of my favourite movies

Maybe I'm wrong and it's just stupid shlock I read too much into, but I thought they were great

My first piece of advice is drop the "pleb/arthouse" dichotomy and don't worry about getting "better" taste, just go after the movies that do speak to and amaze you. Film opens up for you when you begin to understand what you do and don't like and how the effects you like are achieved.

Also "arthouse movies" is a bogus term used by pretentious norts. It just means movies shown in an arthouse. I have seen Terminator, Alien, and Blade Runner at an arthouse theatre. Kind of throws the term off balance then does it not?

anyways, enjoy exploring the form

Wavelength is great, why are you backpeddling?
>a film that consists of only recording a window
I would say it's much more than that ...

In fact for all the claims of it being the same thing for 45 minutes, there are not actually any 2 frames showing the same image. It's one continuous zoom playing with geometry and visual space going through various visual filters and accompanied by an ever changing score. While not the focus of the film, there is also intrigue throughout in the form of a minimalist murder story.

I think as a whole it makes for a nice reflection of the film medium, and the ways we read film vs. the reality of it.

>>
>>63804666
Yeah. It's no Friday night entertainment, I won't pretend it isn't boring at times, but avant-garde film really is a different practice from most of moviemaking. It's the exploration of conceptual games. I think a lot of the hate this type of film gets is from people who don't understand it as a different kind of filmmaking. Wavelength is no substitute for something like The Good The Bad and The Ugly.

>>63804720
I'm no film scholar, I haven't got too much to say off the top of my head, but it's a very big film in avant-garde circles. Try looking it up online or check your local library for pieces published on it. I know there have been entire books written on it.

Yes, yes it is. I did sit throught in one setting, but I guess you could do it in a few sessions. Maybe wath some other post-Almanac of Fall Tarr and see if it is something you would like to try.

Does Satantango have some kind of intermissions, or do I have to pause it myself if I need a short break?
Don't know if I'll be able to make 7 hours without taking a piss, but I don't want to pause and have a useless intermission just after.
>>
>>63805276
haha hate getting this question asked, thats the only one i haven't seen of his so can't compare, very accessible nonetheless , a lot easier imo to watch than turin horse

>>63805306

>>
>>63805304
A few years ago. Most dogma films are pure form experimentation and go nowhere at all, while Festen experiments and delivers a great history. Not many films depict so well the hypocrisy and the lies that hide in an apparently happy bourgeoisie milieu.
>>63805306
It is split into 3 parts, 2 and a half hour each or so.

The sound and the effects during the gunfights really stood out to me, the scene where they're falling down the side of a cliff and just slamming into everything was really visceral and the sound did a great job of making you feel every impact.

It's probably not on my top 9 realistically but with these things it's always difficult for me to pick my actual top 9 unless I'm reminded of a particular movie. To be honest, I'd probably replace either RoTK or Lone Survivor with Nightcrawler but then I'd have to make the collage all over again.
