Can we agree TFA made lightsabers cool again?

They really seemed to have weight to them like they could seriously fuck your shit up, so when characters pulled them out you felt like shit was actually about to get real.

Even when this goofball ignited one, he looked like he could do some damage with it.

Never got that feeling with the prequels and I'm not sure why. I guess because there were too many of them or maybe they were just used too often.
>>
>>63793964
the marketing already made them cool again just by spamming us with adverts

the actual saber fights in TFA were glib facsimiles - the best only had one lightsaber user.
>>
>>63793964

I doubt it, prequel kids in /tv/ are now complaining about the lightsabers having any weight to them.

but it is retarded, the entire point is that they have no weight
>>
>>63793993
It's a fucking stupid idea.
Why would a blade made of light have any weight?
>>
>>63794051

It has mass therefore it must have weight.
>>
>>63794035
It's plasma not light, the stuff stars are made of.
They were originally supposed to be really fucking heavy rather than the other way around, which is why the Ben vs Vader fight looks so weird.
>>

>>
>>63793993
Thats just /tv/ being contrarian like usual
>>
>>63794093
>>63794097
No you dumb bitches.
It's pure energy.
Does a lightbulb become heavier when you turn it on?
Does your phone suddenly become twice as heavy when you wake it up?
>>
>>63794187
It's not made of electricity you knob.
Do you even know what energy is?
>>
>>63794249
Explain to me how energy has weight.
>>
>>63794143

Lightsaber collide with one another and impact with other objects. They must have mass.
>>
>>63794354
No they fucking don't if they are light.
>>
>>63793964
Did they actually photoshop John Booga's face here to make him look like more of an acceptable negroid specemin?
>>
>>63794293
e=mc^2
m = e/c^2
therefore lightsaber which slowly moves at 1 m/s and can burn through steel has mass of few hundred tons at least you retard
>>
>>63794354
>lightsabers collide
>must have mass
Nigger when you put two positive magnets together they push each other away.
The magnetic field is coming from the magnet, or in the case of a lightsaber, the hilt.
The blades don't need mass to repel each other.
>>
>>63794293
Explain to me what the fuck you think energy is

B8 detected.
>>
>>63794376
Good thing they aren't light then but plasma.
>>
>>63794424

They don't repeal one another, they hit each other.

Also you can see the sabers interacting with different objects in different ways. When they are cutting metal they do it much slowly.

Hello reddit.
>>
>>63793964
same thing with blasters, they actually felt like they had punch to them. Blasters in the prequels felt like turning on a flashlight
>>
Except for the fact they introduced some stormtrooper gear that can stop the sabers, so yea, I guess they are less threatening than ever, specially considering everyone who uses them in the movie are not even trained.

Any Jedi in the OT, or PT would wreck the ones in TFA, even fucking Coleman.
>>

Of course, because they're fucking lasers.
They don't have infinite lower, so some shit will be harder to cut.

A metal hilt that generates a laser has weight?
Color me surprised.
>>
>>63793964

I liked that. There were only two of them in the movie, only one duel, and the characters only use them when it's really intense.

Not like the prequels where everyone and their mum has one and whips them out every second scene when they have to glare at a ship taking off in a badass manner.
>>

It's not lasers it's plasma. Just get out of the internet nerd.

In the prequels they had those droids that had those purple electrical staff things that could fight a light saber.

Honestly, I think they kinda diminished them., especially if Finn doesn't turn out to be force sensitive. Before lightsabers felt like beasts that could only be tamed by powerful Jedi lest someone cut their own dick off trying to use it, and every Jedi seemed perfectly in tune with their saber. Now some random ass kids can just pick one up and start fucking shit up with it.

this isn't getting enough attention

a lot of what is SUPPOSED to make light sabers so awesome and scary is that being hit with one is going to mean either death or losing something. you're not supposed to grunt and wince when you get hit.

literally the only exception before this movie was Darth getting a glancing blow on his armor once from Luke, and he's made of metal so no physical part of him was hurt.

JJ has it happening a couple of times per fight and it's going to make lightsabers into glowy swords if any more movies do it. .

Storm troopers have training in melee combat, shown by the trooper with the energy weapon fighting Fin.

Also, Kylo was badly injured. They made it a point to show how strong the wookie bowcaster was throughout the movie for that same reason.

Anakin vs. Dooku briefly in AOTC. Anakin actually made it a point to train dual wielding - think that was from the novelization or another lore book.

Not true, but it certainly looked intense. like there was a legitimate danger of getting your arms cut off. Plus the sabers looked cool in a dark wintery forest, especially how they cut trees down accidentally.

the only thing that stood out of the duels in TFA were that the lightsabers themselves looked like deadly weapons, whereas the prequels made them look like glowsticks and the OT made them look like broadswords.

>>
>>63793964
Yep. And they were choreographed to be more like the fights in the originals instead of the flashy bullshit from the prequels. They actually swung at each other with some emotion and took time to have dialogue and shit during the fights. That moment when Kylo Ren offers to teach Rey and she centres herself before kicking his ass had more meaning and impact than the entirety of the prequels combined.
>>
>>63799461
I'm pretty sure it's been said somewhere that for the first film, they wanted to show the lightsabers as heavy and they asked the actors to hold them as such. Which is funny because Luke just waves that shit around first time.

I mean what were the actual props? Weren't they just plastic or something?

They were plastics for the waving, but they gave Luke something tough for the scene where he slams Vader, hence the weight.
>>

the original props were made from metal flash cylinders from old-ass cameras. Luke's ROTJ saber was half deactivated grenade, so they had some heft to them. as for the prequals I've no idea, probably machined aluminum.

Important to note that "winning" the fight came down to strength, not skill. Remember, the blow that disabled Kylo came after they were in that wrestling pose with their lightsabers pointed away and each trying to force the other into the submission. Now remember that kylo had been shot and repeatedly stabbed and already gone through another fight. Rey was not more skilled than him, she won the fight because she had more of her strength reserved.

you're implying a lot here, I feel. From what I can see, Kylo is an angsty american kid who shoots up a school with an AR15 and gets taken in by 'current new evil guy'. he's not some wiz with a lightsabre or grandmaster of the force, he's a punk. What we can assume for Rey is that she's lived in a shithole all her life, and favours a pole-arm of somekind, so has some experience in melee fighting.

but it is really unrealistic that people just keep getting grazing hits in a fight.

Because in 4,5,6 and 7 they represent something.

They're symbols of good versus evil.
It's like two knights dueling or two samurai going for the one lethal slash.

It's a goddamn light saber.

>>63798481

lightsaber doesn't have weight, and ripostes with a lightsaber therefore would feel different than a heavier weapon that Finn would have trained with.

his lighstaber cut into him, the intensity of the heat alone being held for such prolonged time would've sent Finn into shock (although I can let this one go)

HOWEVER:

he is a stormtrooper, with storm trooper training, which is EXACTLY why he should have fallen to Kylo during a one-on-one. It's not believable otherwise.

And furthermore, Kylo had opportunities to kill Finn before being rushed by Rey. Finn was out and without a weapon. Easy kill.
>>
I'm not gonna lie it really pissed me off at the end when Rae kept lunging her sword at Kylo. I kept thinking about how easy it would have been for Kylo to chop her head off. It wouldn't have been so bad if she did it once or twice, but she legit did it 4-5 times. It honestly seemed like Fin was more adept at sword fighting than she was, but because of plot armour, she outperformed Kylo.

>>

>htsaber doesn't have weight, and ripostes with a lightsaber therefore would feel different than a heavier weapon that Finn would have trained with.

One of the reasons he lots the fight with the other trooper.

> which is EXACTLY why he should have fallen to Kylo during a one-on-one.

He did.

I don't see what are you arguing, everything you said happened in the movie.
>>
>>63800676
That's what I'm leaning towards. I think a lot of people hyped up Ren to much being Vader 2.0, so him getting his ass beat is fueling all the Mary Sue arguments even more. I didn't look at a thing in the build up apart from a few promo images and after watching, he just comes across to me as like an airsoft/paintballer who thinks they're in Delta.

>>63800942
It's a movie, sometimes you have to suspend your disbelief. Like whenever you have a bad guy monologue their plans for exposition.
>>
>>63800846
the whole point of lightsabers is meant to be that if you get hit by one you are fucked because they cut through things without them offering any real resistance. they just tossed that lethality into the garbage.

>>
>>63794143
Technically depending on who you talk to, photons (light) are particles so therefore have a mass. From there it is not too much of a stretch to say once they are compacted/compressed they would have quite the mass once solid
>>
>>63801050
Really though? You're telling me Kylo is so incompetent that he can't land a single good hit on two untrained kids?
>>
>>63801050
>like an airsoft/paintballer who thinks they're in Delta.

Indeed.

>>63801060
>the whole point of lightsabers is meant to be that if you get hit by one you are fucked

Not true in any way, shape or form.

>they just tossed that lethality into the garbage.

...and if you are just grazed by one? Do you magically disappear due to its death field or do you get burned and the wound cauterized?

They are still super lethal, if used correctly, not by two amateurs and a badly wounded apprentice.
>>
>>63801068
I figured it was because he only received force training and not a lot of saber combat. I mean he never had opportunities to use the saber in a duel, so he doesn't have the experience.

But as far as finn and rey goes theres no reason they should've stood a chance.
>>
>>63801163
He was cringing with pain and stopping his swings midway due to it. Completely possible to miss certain opportunities.
>>
>>63794093
Light is photons which have no mass.

I'm laughing at the dorks saying "it's plasma" as if they know what plasma actually is.
>>
>>63801197
I think he surely has received some, but it was not the most important part of his training.

Which is curios, he was after Luke, how did he expect to win? Force only? Surely Luke is stronger and more experienced, even if Snork taught Ren some shady Sith tricks.
>>
>>63800725
That's a common trope in fantasy. Some empire creates advanced technology, flying airships, etc., then they disappear and everyone's back to fighting with sticks.

It's probably based on real-life misunderstandings about the so-called Dark Ages. Or people who think Ancient Greece was some amazing utopia and the Middle Ages were universally shit.

Also I forgot to mention this was implied by some fluff about padawan lightsabers being next to harmless as the blades are less dense due to presumably smaller density of photons, like lasers we have now depending on intensity eg. Visual uses to industrial cutting

They were in their late teens or early twenties. Pretty much perfect soldier age. Especially for a soldier trained from birth and a woman who had some kind of vague hitting-shit-with-a-spear experience.
>>
>>63801163
Until they give more background on all three, I'm going to withold saying anything for certain.

The way I'm seeing it at the moment. Finn was taught (as a soldier), but shit at it. Rey learned to fight through street fights and relies on intuition rather than technique. And Ren is some kind of loremaster who has trained against dolls and inferior opponents but never against somebody with the potential to match him.

Also, you know, Ren being blasted by Chewi's OP Bowcaster and being an emotional wreck in general. I don't think he has the mental clarity to fight properly or as well as he could, even if he was well trained.

Again, until we get background on all three, people are most likely going to stick to the opinions they've already formed and ignore everything else.
>>
>>63801414
But he was literally carried out of there after getting wrecked.
>>
>>63801444
>Rey learned to fight through street fights and relies on intuition rather than technique.

Also, the Force is a living thing and can guide people, like it did with Luke and the torpedo in ANH. It sounds gay, but it's part of the lore.

1) If he's shit at it, then how did he survive?

2) What sort of "street fights" would improve Rey's fighting ability? I'm only judging based on what I saw in the movie, but it looks like 99% of the creatures she meets are either tiny pushovers, or bigass CGI turds that would eat her if it was legal.
>>
>>63799575
True and possibly affecting the prequel showofferry was Ray Park instructing Lucas on how his idea for the dualblade wouldn't work so they had to make it longer and stuff.
>>
>>63801583
Exactly, it guides people, and you can train to control and use it in the way you want

aka no mindtricking and force pulling right out the bat
>>
>>63801238
Right, but he should have been able to lop Finn's arm off or slice him in two instead of landing glancing blows. You'd have to be trying to not actually damage them to barely miss like he did. It felt like they tried to do something similar to the Anakin/Obi-Wan/Yoda vs Dooku fight, but without the Yoda of the scene it doesn't work. Luke should've showed up and wiped the floor with Kylo, not have Rey, who just learned she could use the force like an hour beforehand, beat him. That way Kylo could still be intimidating in the sequels. Who's gonna be scared of him now?
>>
>>63801298
Nigga did you sit through physics when the cathode ray tube and "ferris wheel" experiment was explained? Photons share both characteristics of waves and particles depending on the context, and seeing as though lightsabers are "condensed light" it's likely in this situation they are treated as particles as it makes sense to condense a bunch of "bits" than to contain an EM wave

Don;t worry, he will finish the training, learn more stuff, drop the edgy teen act and go more intense, but composed evil. We are only in the beginning.

What is this memery? Literally nowhere in the OT is it implied, let alone outright stated that lightsabers can only be used by force sensitive people. It's a sword with a toggle switch. Sure, if you aren't force sensitive you won't have the reflexes to deflect beams of light. But you can still hack someone to bits.

>>
>>63801956
>Would you want a 10 second fight where Kylo Force freezes them both and chops their heads of? C'mon anon.
I don't think people here understand concepts such as dramatic effect and think that everything should play out in a realistic manner, like Indie shooting the swordsman. They're probably the type who legitimately wonder why the eagles didn't fly the hobbits to Mordor
>>

>>
>>63802039
Nitpicking is tedious. Especially when one side is arguing hyper realism that would negate 99% of the movie instantly.
>>
>>63801956
From what I recall, Lucas originally wanted it to be basically a normal lightsaber handle but with two blades. Ray Park told him something that it would do more harm to the user rather than work fine so they had to essentially make it longer to accommodate for the fighting style.
>>
>>63802036
Han was being smarmy. Luke was 19 or so, not an actual child.

I'd rather fight someone in their late twenties or their thirties than someone in their late teens or early twenties. If I had to completely gamble on experience, and this was a fantasy/medieval type world.
>>
>>63801754
>1)
Survive what? Throughout life, or the movie? He's one of the few force sensitive characters that's aware of it and has nominal training, that automatically puts him ahead of anyone else.

Like if you were in a sports team with a bunch of starving Africans, but you had access to a gym and all the food you need to bulk. You don't have to be God-like when everyone else is emaciated. If you're talking about the movie, then it's solely for the sake of plot - like I said earlier, it's a film and sometimes you have to suspend your disbelief.

>2)
Any. It doesn't matter if you win or lose. The more you fight against equal opponents, the more you learn. You learn more from a competitive game with somebody than a blow out. Up until the events of the movie, Rey isn't that much more special than anybody else, even if she has the potential; she's still fighting over the same piece of dirt. During the movie, she basically goes Super Saiyan, which is absurdly fast, but whatever. It's done now.

>Never got that feeling with the prequels and I'm not sure why.

In the prequels, they did shit like pic related a lot.

Also, the lightsabers never interracted with the ambient surroundings. They did shit when they hit stuff, but that was rare and obviously choreographed. Nothing came off as "candid".

Also, and this is a huge jarring error that I'm surprised I never noticed until seeing the lightsabers in TFA, but the lightsabers in the prequel trilogy don't emit light. When Mace Windu lights his saber, he's not bathed in purple light like he should be, and the way people are in TFA.

They don't in the OT either. Not consistently, at least. What I'm saying is it fucks Kylo's character up to get his shit kicked by a girl who has never handled a lightsaber before. I don't need it to be realistic, I need there to be actual stakes. Luke didn't just go in and fuck Vader's shit up the moment he got a lightsaber. He got his ass kicked, because that added stakes and tension to his duels. If Rey's already more powerful than Kylo, what makes you think he'll be a match for her once she gets training?

To be fair, they'd be retreading too much ground if they rehashed Vader outright in a movie that is already rehashing hard.

Something it made me curious about is what would actually happen if you handed an average joe a sword, pitted him against a decent sword user, and told him to defend himself.

>>63803658
>Vader has all this backstory to him

In the original trilogy he had less backstory than Kylo Ren had in this movie.

Ren doesn't need to be on par with Vader, he just needs to be threatening, because that's Villain Writing 101 on your first day of Screenwriting For Blockbusters in film school. The only time he was was in the first scene where he does one cool thing stopping the blaster shot, then he gets btfo by people who should not be on his level.

He's just a failed execution of a villain because JJ wanted him to be scary but then also wanted Rey to win in the end, and these two things are simply directly contradictory.
>>
>>63803688
Well, one thing I appreciated was the Rey spent most of the battle running away, because I think that's basically the only way you survive that kind of situation. When Luke fought Vader head on, he got his ass handed to him until after he trained. Rey knows how to fight (see: market scene), which is probably enough for her to fend off attacks for a few seconds before she sees a window to keep running.
