The Host
Mother
Man from Nowhere
A Bittersweet Life
No Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance
Sympathy for Lady Vengeance
I Saw The Devil
The Chaser

honestly even if you watched all of these & the two you mentioned, you'd still be scratching the surface of the amazing Korean cinema.
>>
>>63792956
ِAnd Thirst (2009). I forgot to mention it but it was fucking beautiful.
>>
>>63792956
I've seen all of those except for Mother and The Chaser
I Saw the Devil is a near perfect movie IMO
However, Bittersweet Life gets way more praise than it deserves. Good but weirdly paced.

I'm kinda worried that The Chaser will be too much like Yellow Sea (really good first half, second half becomes a mindless bloodbath that adds little to the plot)
>>
Ha Jung Woo, I think, is the new guy to look out for
-Nameless Gangster, Yellow Sea, Kundo, The Chaser

he's excellent, potential to become the next Lee-Byung Hun, plus he's the male lead in the 2016 Park Chan Wook film
>>
>>63792525
Memories of murder is the best korean film.
>>
>>63792525

I've only seen four Korean films, I think.

Oldboy - shit
3-Iron - excellent
Castaways on the Moon - excellent
The Host - excellent

haha i remember finding this after first watching MoM a year ago.

Nameless Gangster and Yellow Sea are amazing. Don't know why but I think they feel like the "biggest" korean movies I've seen for a long time, there's a particular grandness to them which is awesome.
>>
How is Peppermint Candy? I downloaded it but haven't gotten around to watching it yet.
>>
was disappointed in I saw the devil, 3 iron, Chaser, and Thirst. All were mediocre compared to Vengeance trilogy and Joon Ho's films besides snowpiercer, which also was a huge letdown

oldboy is the least-korean korean movie I've seen
>>
>>63795310
Great film, one of my favourite Korean films actually.
>>
what do people think of New World?
I ask because everyone recommends it

Hwang Jung Min steals the show with his acting and the elevator knife scene is great, but idk, the plot was typical and confusing
>>
>>63792525
I still need to watch this.

>>63792956
Good taste.
That said what little I had to see of Man from Nowhere (around 15 minutes) just looked like an imitation of Leon. Does it change as it goes?
>>
>>63795268
It's because Kim Yoon Seok and Ha Jung Woo are such versatile actors.
Like they actually switched roles from the Chaser to Yellow Sea and proved they can both play great protagonists and antagonists
>>
>>63797543
>mfw theres no sequel
y live
>>
The Chaser's my favorite, but there are a lot that closely follow.
>>
>>63792956
The Host is the exact reason 2014 Godzilla pissed me off.
You could tell Gareth was going for a character driven kaiju movie, but I ended up not giving a fuck about a single character in it.

By the time I finally got around to The Host I practically knew the main characters within five minutes of seeing them, and could feel the impact of what the monster ended up doing.
Five minutes and I loved these people.

Why is Gareth Edwards such a hack?
>>
>>63797543
I thought it was boring and uninteresting as fuck. Well-made to a fault. It felt like it came from a factory line.
>>
>>63792956
Sympathy for lady vengeance is shit. It's a korean eli roth flick.
>>
>>63797595
A Man from Nowhere is a typical brutal thriller but it's really well executed. It does not really go down the Leon route, instead opting for a more straightforward approach. I'd recommend it. It has some pretty great fights.
>>
>>63797731
>comparing Lady Vengeance to anything Roth has done

Have you seen his movies? Lady Vengeance is better than anything he's made by far.
>>
>>63797757
I'll give it another shot. I didn't actively dislike what I'd seen; shit happened and I hadn't thought of it again till now.
>>
>>63792893
He really is a godtier actor.
>>
>>63797731
I bet your favorite Korean movie is dragon wars

To be fair, Lady Vengeance has a odd final act that took another viewing to appreciate. At first, it felt like Oldboy became 12 Angry Men
>>
>>63797870
dude did you see The Throne?

>mfw this shit was based on true story
>>
I've been living in Korea for a year already.
The film industry is amazing here, I've seen so many hidden gems that is really disappointing to see the same 10 films posted over and over again.
>>
>>63797932
No, but it's on my list.
>>
>>63797767
Yes i saw it and i couldn't believe how much worse it was than the first to. Lady gets together family members of the murderers victims and they take turns torturing him. That's it. There it's nothing to it.
>>
>>63797967
I was there last sept/october

share some stuff man i love that country!
>>
>>63797967
theres more freedom as director
since producer has different role than hollywood
but Korean Film industry has some darkside too
staffs are treated like shit unlike Hollywood
theres union
>>
>>63797967
Any recommendations? That applies to TV series, too.
I've got a whole Korea section to go through, and I don't even know where to start.
>>
>>63797932
Ugh, another period piece. Those bore me to death. The only good ones were The General and The King and the Clown.

That's like saying Oldboy's just about a guy who tortures a man to insanity because he busted him fucking his sister.
>>
>>63798044
Mi-Seng 미생
no cringey love story
straight drama about Korean Work Office culture
>>
>>63797979
............
>>
>>63797932
Is it any good? It looks like revisionist bullshit.

Like they're like "prince sado is a troubled guy", nah, he's like an insane rapist
>>

>mfw The Throne is the director of King and Clown
>>
>>63798105
Do it. I'll definitely save it.

>>63798111
That's a good start. Much obliged.
>>
>>63792525

This movie was a real treat. I hadn't seen any s korean joints before and this was my first, and probably the best I've seen. S Korea is hot for thrillers right now.

From there, I've also seen and would recommend:
Mr. Vengeance (same main character as MoM)
Oldboy
The Chaser (same main character as MoM, I believe)
I Saw The Devil.

Based on that, could anybody recommend me something as well?
>>
>>63792525
Lady vengence is better then oldboy so its not oldboy. Hell I think even i saw the devil is better. Never seen this though
>>
>>63798135
its pretty interesting
they explain some actions were based on political stance...
and shows how the Prince Sado were pushed to the insanity
>>
>>63798047
Kundo was good shit. Also, the Good, the Bad, the Weird
>>
>>63798186
>(same main character as MoM, I believe)

I thought so too, but it's not

Best actors in Korean cinema?

I personally think it's Song Kang-Ho and Choi Min-Sik at the top.

MOEBIUS
>>
>>63798409
I agree with both those.

Also the main character from A Moment To Remember and the dude from Going By The Book.
>>
>>63798435
thats japanese film
but the actor is pretty fucking based
>>
>>63798435
Even though thats an excellent movie, this is a Korean movie thread, not japanese
>>
>>63798308
holy shit, really?
>>
>>63798186
The first two replies are all good.
I was iffy about Snowpiercer considering other English language movies directed by South Koreans, but it's also based as fuck and well worth watching.
Turns out it was produced entirely in South Korea.
>>
>it's a Kim Ki-duk joint

comfy af
>>
>>63798498
she did watch the movie though
and told me the scene where
middle school girl getting killed at the end
scares her most because she was at the same age..
strange thing is the killer raped women regardless of age
first victim was granny
second was i think mid twenties
>>
I'm a Cyborg, But that's Okay
>>
>>63798474
Shit, the guy from A Moment is the Good from The Good, The Bad, The Weird
>>
>>63798633
It's all in the mustache.
>>
Did anyone see that 2014 thriller A Hard Day?

That shit was surprisingly fresh. Cho Jin Woong was so good as a smug, odd villain.
>>
>>63798930
I love that one. That and Sea Fog are the only ones worth watching from the last few years.
>>
>>63797595

It's pretty much the same as Man on Fire.
>>
There's a classic film from 1979 that's recently been transferred from film to BluRay called Sonagi that is pretty good, with amazing cinematography.
>>
>>63797967
Well for the majority of us that don't live in korea, maybe you could recommend us some movies ay?
