Star Trek refuge thread.

Prime and mirror universes are best universes.
>>
Is star trek just a more political version of Star Wars? Because I really want a giant in depth universe rather then "Look at all these costumes lmao!"
>>
>>63790188

Mostly philosophical really. Watching Star Trek is a lot like sucking dick and getting your ass fucked.
>>
>>63790188
Rottenberrie's Trek wasn't.
it became exactly that once The Undiscovered Country came out.
And that was for the best.
>>
>>63790188
>a giant in depth universe
You think autists have been not shutting the fuck up about this show for almost 50 years if it didn't have some deep lore?

The fun is trying to figure out how everything works with the snippets of information you get. Such as the realities of living in a post scarcity intergalactic culture and things like that.

Good stuff to provoke discussions.
>>
>>63790188
I actually find the Star Trek universe to have more substance than the Star Wars one, they have different intentions and slightly different audiences.

Yes, and that means you'll probably like Star Trek.

>>63790333
Start with either TOS or TNG and watch all the way through. Viewing lists are for autists.
>>
>>63790333
Depends what you want, really.
>The original series
late 60s TV, didn't always age well. Has some very predictable episodes, especially now that the structure they had has become clichés. The Kirk/Bones/Spock character dynamic works like oiled clockwork though.

>TOS Movie
very hit or miss since it has the best Trek movies (Wrath of Khan, Voyage Home, Undiscovered Country) some "meh" ones (Search for Spock, Motion Picture that people seem to either really love or really hate) and arguably the worst Trek film (Final Frontier)

>The Next Generation
Had a slow beginning since the main writer and creator of the show didn't realize that you couldn't write TV shows in the 80s like you did in the 60s. Peaker from season 3 to 6, which is possibly the best Star Trek has ever been. Has both excellent episodes and completely shitty ones.

>Deep Space 9
Die-hard trekkies may refuse to call it a Trek show since it is not focused on exploration and discovery like the two previous shows were. It also takes some time to really begin but once it gets moving, things get great. The Dominion Wars is what most people refer to when they say Star Trek can be some sort of political sci-fi

>Voyager
Well, it's controversial.
Trek shows have always been as much sci-fi as they were character-driven drama. And the problem here is that none of the characters are very likeable. Has some good, if not great moments, but also has massive fluff-rape and shit episodes, plus tends to take some poor decisions too.

>Enterprise
Very interesting premise, but like Voyager, the cast isn't very engaging. the show lost a lot of time with some pretty silly story-arcs (basically : >time travel >ever) and it was cut short due to low ratings.

>TNG Movies
Not very good, except for First Contact, which isn't brilliant either.

>JJ Trek
pure skub

Star Trek is a left wing science fiction about a benevolent world and interstellar govenment that explores space together.

Star Wars is a right wing space fantasy about rebelling against an evil government by clinging to guns and ancient religion.
>>
>>63790817
The macroviruses in Voyager.
Infact, most of Voyager's CG was pretty awful. Except for the ships.
>>
>>63790333
If you've never seen it before you're obligated to sit through every episode of every season until you're done, or your give up.

Best way to ease yourself in is watch the original movies (while I love TMP, its OK to start with wrath of Khan) once you're done with the original movies, start TNG, then DS9. From there you can decide to wrap back around and watch TOS, or go to voyager and ENT.

I personally love TOS, maximum comfy, and has some good Sci-Fi, but low production values and camp aren't everyone's cup of tea.

TNG movies are terrible, but watch them if you want.

Voyager gets better upon rewatches (once you figure out based Janeway is clinically insane), and ENT gets better each season. But those two are without a doubt the most divisive of the franchise.

I've heard this before, but it seems too cut and dry.

I don't think Star Trek is left wing because people obey the rules of the federation largely by choice. Like the intercoms in The Neutral Zone. Anyone CAN use them, but people refrain because they know how to control themselves.

This is closer to a libertarian ideal than a leftist one.

Also, leftism cannot exist in a society without money. I can't think of a single instance where the word "inequality" was used on ST. And leftists can find inequality any fucking where-- even in people's height.

No it is not. Star Trek is like if human culture achieved so much to the point where they've evolved. The philosophy would be growth and putting forth our best effort. The politics / conflict comes from having to interact with retarded aliens or work on personal problems or technological problems. Its not as political as people think (Except maybe DS9). It is more philosophical and personal than Star Wars. There is much more going on in Star Trek. That said I think Star War's EU was better developed. With Star Trek you can always find an episode that adresses some real life problem in a smart way. Star Wars is almost more spiritual / religious, and its gotten to be mostly about violence.
>>
>>63791037

star wars has tons of political subtext, pay attention. it's probably more political than trek. trek is basically about the human "normalcy" trying to absorb the alien "deviations" and occasionally questioning the normalcy itself (the borg is a satirical extrapolation of the federation). all social problems are assumed to be solved on earth (though you never see how) so the show transfers them onto the "deviant" alien races the federation has to "tame".

Trek is firmly inside of the space-opera and sci-fi genre anon. Even if it is a lot of handwaving and modulated deflector shields it still has a loose attempt to have a grounding in science.

Compare warp drives to hyperdrives. One works by magic, the other has a clearly defined and explained method of propulsion.

Very clearly they're Kobolds.

Watch a Top Ten or Top Twenty episode list of TOS. If you like what you see, go back to the beginning and watch the whole show.

Watch the pilot of TNG, then try watching from the beginning of the third season. If you like what you see, go back to the beginning and watch the whole show.

Save DS9 as a reward for when you finish TOS and TNG.

>rek is basically about the human "normalcy" trying to absorb the alien "deviations" and occasionally questioning the normalcy itself (the borg is a satirical extrapolation of the federation). all social problems are assumed to be solved on earth (though you never see how) so the show transfers them onto the "deviant" alien races the federation has to "tame".
sounds like trek is very political but just in a way that you don't like.

His full name is: Siddig El Tahir El Fadil El Siddig Abderrahman Mohammed Ahmed Abdel Karim El Mahdi. But went under Siddig El Fadil until sometime during DS9 when he changed it to Alexander Siddig.

Only other movie I can ever remember him in was Syriana, where he played a middle eastern character. Not Trek related at all, but it's good.

Bashir wasn't the most entertaining doctor, but his character wasn't bad. The EMH is of course the best, but Bashir and Plox are tied with me, possibly because I consider DS9 (even if it's a Babylon 5-clone) to be vastly superior to the boredom that was Enterprise. (There were a few episodes, but the only entertainement value in those were the references to earlier Trek-series or films, which I considered humorous.)

It was so boring they had to retcon him into an ubermench. Even though doing so makes no sense given the setting.

Also, aside from the quickening thing, he's never a doctor, just an extra officer to hang B plots on. The best part about him was an excuse for more scenes with Garak.

Search your feelings.

>Except for the ships.
afaik most of the ships in the 90s trek where models + motion control cams.... thats why they still look great, one can easily spot the cg ships ... for the dominion wars i guess they used motion control and models + cg for fx and composition
>>
>>63794633
Probably one of the episodes where Brent Spiner tried "acting".
These were fun. Not for the right reasons, but still.
>>
>>63794703
By the end of DS9 they were doing a lot in CG. There is a voyager model for establishing shots, but they're sparse. All of the alien ships are CG as far as I know.
>>
>>63794703
That's the case for TNG and most of DS9. With Voyager, they started to use CG ships more often.
Until the Enterprise point where there were no models anymore.
But hey, even the early trek CG hips looked better than Babylon 5.

The ships are hardly shown in trek anyways. For a few seconds on a view screen, or re-used establishing shot for after the commercial break of the ship in warp, or around a planet, or whatever.

Aside from a phaser blast and stock explosion or two there's not a lot of ship to ship combat.

I'll agree with you that this felt very forced and fourth-wall breaking.
They constantly referenced the 19th and 20th century; it felt like if a Roman was writing fiction that took place in the present day and had every character constantly saying "this is just like the ancient Roman practice of [x]!"
>>
>>63797486
almost all of those things are attributed to Picard. that was his character. he was a stuffy relic from a bygone era. there are plenty of story arcs that show him having to deal with a galaxy that isn't black and white.

if you even watched TNG you'd know that Picard is a good captain, but kind of a shitty person that nobody likes to hang out with.
