The prequels were much better written, they had actual characters and story, not a bunch of memes and one-liners that lack any emotion or coherence. Luke is a cliched everyboy "hero" that goes through an absurdly rapid transformation between the fifth and the sixth episodes. Anakin's emotional instability and his exposure as a psychopath are gripping; and his doomed relationship with Padme is touching. In the "original trilogy" Han, Leia, Darth Vader and Obi Wan are complete meme characters, nothing about them is remotely believable or human. And why doesn't anyone care about deaths in those movies? Leia's planet destruction, Luke's stepparents' death, all of the blown up rebels--the list could go on--all the deaths are forgotten moments later.
As for direction, the movies from the "original trilogy" were mostly incoherent, badly edited and full of logical problems. The prequel trilogy is a work of a "vulgar auteur".
I feel neutral about the series overall, and honestly don't care about trolling or contrarianism. Here are my sincere rankings:

I was really looking forward to Phasma, Raid pirates and lightsaber fights.
First two had literally 0 screen time, such a waste. Lightsaber fight kinda sucked. This combined with copy pasta plot makes it the least favourite Star Wars movie for me.
If I put these things aside it was still fun and enjoyable.. Im just that one unlucky person who was looking forward to all the stuff that got cut out of final cut or something..
I dont feel I wasted money, but at the same time I see no reason to ever watch it again.

Finally! I can finally share my true original patrician opinion of the prequels!
It's been 16 years since I sat down for my first screening of The Phantom Menace. The visuals and score were captivating -- the story telling and dialogue were top notch as well. Let's not forget the acting. It was out of this world! I could tell the entire prequel trilogy would be of the highest quality, and it was as it turns out.
I thought to myself then the same as I think now: thank the heavens for George Lucas. He truly is the patron saint of auteurs.
Alas, much like the underbelly of the Galactic Senate, there was a dark side to The Phantom Menace's success. The movie was TOO good.
I instantly regretted my having seen it as I was 100% convinced that the prequel trilogy would eventually be followed by vastly inferior installments that would force me to resent Star Wars. I absolutely knew beyond a doubt that they would contain race mixing via a cuckoldry story line. And even though I knew this, I was absolutely convinced that I wasn't sure of my knowing this, therefor I was 100% right even if my suspicions did not come to fruition.
Even and especially IF this were not the case, I was also absolutely certain beyond a doubt that the succeeding installments in question would be mediocre. This would make it vastly inferior to the perfection that was the prequel trilogy as they were all terrible, but memorable films.
Furthermore, any attempts and successes at quality film making present in these future installments would most certainly be negated by the fact that elements of the movies would be analogous to elements of previous Star Wars films, therefor lowering the entire film below the quality of anime.
I knew in my heart all those years ago -- 16 years ago -- that George Lucas selling the franchise to Disney was the worst possible thing that could happen to Star Wars. I knew it, and yet, I never voiced my opinions -- passively siding with the enemy. Sorry /tv/.

Less than stellar acting from most the cast, a forced together plot, and some cheesy parts like when ObiWans ghost tells Luke to use the force, and he turns off his targeting computer.

VII was a soulless safe play. It had no depth or distinguishing characteristics. Writers fucked up the scaffolding of story by throwing in unnecessary limits on story development. Ending was good at least. Left theater feeling almost empty, but at least looking forward to sequel (Director from Looper will kill it).
Episode I should have been better, but went to shit thanks to Jar Jar and writing. Redeeming qualities were the Ideas/concepts feeling authentically like Star Wars. Entertaining. Original. New improvements... but fucking Jar Jar and that dialogue though... still an ok-good movie.
I think people will realize that this movies amount of issues were similar in amount to episode 1, but where everything episode 1 did right, episode 7 did wrong (and vice verse).
Episode 1 basically tried to do way too much shit with lousy script writing/characters (delivered schizophrenic... trying to be overly funny, overly serious), while Episode 7 played it way too safe, nothing seemed to happen, and delivered very stale.
Also what the fuck happened to the soundtrack.
Overall once these rose tinted glasses get removed from peoples eyes, and the Star Wars hysteria dies down, people will see that this movie was ok-good, yet a disappointment (especially considering all the resources they had).
Episode VII was marginally better than Episode 1, but not by much (if you remove Jar Jar and Lloyd's shit tier child acting they are definitely on par).
