Here's my theory:
Snoke is a new character. He was an apprentice of Sheev. Sheev saw how darth vader was trying to turn Luke and that he might use Luke to overthrow him. So he secretly trains snoke in order to counter vader and Luke. Unfortunately his greed for power gets to him and he becomes convinced he can turn luke like her turned his father and abandons snoke.
