I feel the writers were trying to do a better prequel story in the context of having to acknowledge them. They tried to fill in plot holes and make sense of Lucas' shitty writing.
Sometimes this leads them to ham-stringing themselves with stupid shit like Jar Jar, but they try their best to make him work, which is why every other character hates him.
Ashoka is much more interesting than Anakin or Obi-Wan

I agree with this. There's some bad arcs and some good arcs, but you're just going to confuse yourself by trying to pick and choose, and in the end, it's all character-building which is important for the conclusion of the series.
