I actually listen to Kermode because unless the movie is really really good (and praised as such) I can usually tell what I won't like as exactly what he likes.
That said, this is about his opinion on TFA being predictable as shit, not different. I honestly can't remember the last blockbuster he disliked that wasn't Zak Snyder (about whom I agree completely) or Michael Bay. Maybe the last Terminator?

I liked the last James Bond, it was mindless fun. The villains are cartoony in their motivations for wanting a world surveillance system but it's easy to understand and easy to be happy when Bond beats them and throws out his zingers.
TFA doesn't have a decent villain to root against or a decent hero to root for. It can't decide whether it wants to be simple fun or something more, so gets caught in between in mediocrity.

No but I think that mindless fun has its place too, and if it does it well then it should be praised for what it is. You're allowed to like simple movies as well as complex ones and both can be done well and badly, Avatar is a better simple movie than Transformers for example.

He doesn't "hate" Star Wars. He just sees them as movies rather than what the fanboys perceive them to be, some sort of holy grail. He even knows that Empire is the best and Jedi was the worst of the originals.
It's not surprising he likes this whatsoever, because it's a really well put together movie.

not him, but sure nobody is against mindless fun, but then again, Fury Road is top notch fun flick, one of the best movies of the year. James Bond to me felt like just another james bond, it had good cinematography and a good action sequence at the beginning, that's all it had. And I didn't watch a james bond movie since casino roayle, and I went to a cinema to watch it, and was still let down.
What I'm trying to say that nobody is against fun, were against companies making factory movies with not much soul in them. The worst kind to me is the "biopic" oscar-bait shit.
