Why are all characters in Melancholia ridiculously rich?
Is it intended to make us unsympathetic for them?

The movie is about how depression is justified. At first it's baseless. Justine has to be rich so it seems like there is no reason for her to be unhappy.

Antonioni employed this to remove all obstacles from his characters beyond their personal psycholgy. Von Trier, having made his career aping better filmmakers, likely has done the same.

Is this film suppose to take place in the future? Seems like the people are shocked about Melancholia headed toward Earth and it hits a few days later. Wouldn't they know it's coming like at least months in advance? Only answer this question if you work for NASA
