What's with Feminism and creating Mary Sues?
Why can't we have believable female leads and sides in 2015?
Look at Sarah Connor, Princess Leia, Trinity and other female characters of the past. They were empowered and all that anti-tumblr-trigger stuff, yet they were completely believable.
Now look at Rey. She isn't part of the movie's internal reality, she exists as a character only to fulfill her role as the empowered female in a movie, she is above and away from the actual universe where the other characters live.
Why must this keep happening and when will this stop happening?
If you want to be sure you can't attack your female character, she has to be perfect.
If you attack a perfect character, you then dislike the one thing that can be disliked, which is the fact that said character is a woman.

Luke had his ass kicked and all the time even when reaching his full Jedi status.
She only changed how she used her perfect power and person. From kicking ass to kicking ass as a Jedi.
Luke actually learned to be stronger throughout the movies, but never became a ultimate master Jedi.

Luke was already a natural pilot. We don't know that Rey hasn't been trained already, but even so, her use of the force is not so different from Anakin's pod-racing reflexes. The only person she beats is a pleb Sith Padawan, not a Dark Lord like Vader.

You are comparing a female lead character to an absolute turd of a character who proceeds to destroy a federation ship after flying a fighter jet for the first time in his life because of his "midi-chlorians".

It's established that both Luke and Anakin had been piloting/podracing for years. Both of them related piloting a starfighter to their respective experience (womp rats not much larger than 2 meters line/Anakin fucking around in space)
Rey was doing all sorts of crazy maneuvers within 5 minutes of her first time inside a ship.

That's the point.
Making your character a Mary Sue is the last resort when you can't write likeable characters.
If your character never does anything wrong, never fails and is always under the spotlight, you might be tricked into believing people will like him/her.

Hey the OG Sarah Connor character from T1/T2 is totally believable. She starts off a waitress, runs for her life, gets her ass kicked and "win" by luck. It's not like she kung fu'ed the T-800 to death with her bare hands.
2nd film she starts out locked up, acting nuts. Gets out, runs for her life again and shoots guns a whole bunch of times. Then we find out she more or less banged a merc dude or two and learned low level tactics from them. That's it as far as her skill set. Again, no hand to hand BS over powering 5+ swat members at the same time or 20second master hacker on your Gibson.
Her body count is really low too so you can't even claim she was too much of a crack shot for someone with her limited training.
