The Republic backed the Resistance but didn't bother to do anything about a Fascist army with a giant planet laser? It looked the Republic were just being hedonistic and fucking around. Was the Resistance just their army?

Okay so let me explain this shit for you.
When the Rebels took out all of the high end leaders of the Empire, they didn't kill EVERY leader. The empire was spread out across the Galaxy. HOWEVER, with the massive power gap from the top Empire leaders being dead, the Rebels were able to force themselves in to a position of power and conquer the Empire politically.
However, even though the newly formed New Republic was in control, there were still pockets of Empire left in the galaxy. Since the New Republic wanted to give the illusion that there was no more war or conflict, they formed a shadow army known as the Resistance to fight back against the remaining pockets of Empire.
What we see in episode 7 is the few remaining pockets of the empire taken over by one leader, who is NOT a sith or a jedi, merely a follower of the dark side's beliefs and the Empires ideals.
So tl;dr - New government doesn't want people thinking there is still conflict, so they form a shadow army to take out any and all remnants of the old government, who ends up getting ruled by a single leader.

>>63775331I'm pretty sure some of the books explain how the New Republic demilitarized pretty quickly after beating most of the leftover Imperial remmants. It seems like the Resistance works more inside territory where there is more influence by the First Order, hence why it's a "resistance". It's still seems to be funded by the Republic tho, just from how Hux talks about it.

Episode 6, Sheev dies, Anakin was his apprentice meaning he was next in line, regardless of existing rank. Empire needs to be run by the Sith, or at least someone with their ideology. Anakin redeems himself and also dies, so what about every other high raking official in the empire? Did they all just fuck off because "WELP THE TWO BIG GUYS ARE DEAD I GUESS THAT'S IT BETTER NOT TRY AND REGROUP WITH THE OTHER SENIOR MEMBERS IN CHARGE AND SEE WHAT THE FUCK TO DO"? No. They were disorganized for a time while the Empire tried to work out who should logically be in charge next. This window, plus the fact that people stood up to the empire after hearing about Sheev & Vader's demise allowed the Rebels to assert themselves as the Republic.
Given the direct info we got from the movie, Snoke was put in charge, or rather took charge and unified the remnants of the empire around the same time Han and Leia had Ben. The storm troopers we see in 7 are the first generation of kidnapped children who are brainwashed in to having loyalty to the First Order. They also begin construction of the Star Killer in secret.
When Ben was still a teen, he somehow came in contact with Snoke, who brought him over to the dark side. Leia started the resistance to fight against the people who took her son away from her, and Han went back to smuggling.
