I don't really think that's a bad thing. You talk about wasted potential and no doubt he's a genius at relatively safe improv, but did you ever see the bloopers from that Chappelle's Show skit? He was sweating bullets through the whole thing. He's definitely more Jay Leno than Richard Pryor, and there's nothing wrong with knowing your limits.
