The Force Awakens.

where and how did the first order manage to get the resources and manpower to build the starkiller when building the death star taxed the resources of the empire when it was at its peak in power?

How did they manage to hide the construction of such a weapon from the newly reformed republic, or anyone who would find such information valuable to sell?

How does the "shot" manage to reach other far away systems in such a short ammount of time without the use of hyperspace?
>>
>>63750222
It was prequel level retarded.

I wonder what pushed Luke to fuck off to a distant planet and let the dark side grow

i wonder what pushed him to give his location to a droid

why are all the chosen one so fucking pathetic

Also we now have 2 jedi for 1 lightsaber
>>
they had 30 years.

and how do we know it taxed the empire? it was a huge project yea but the starkiller thing wasn't exactly like for like - it was a planet with a huge cannon on it basically. i don't think it could move.

Since apparently the galaxy is smaller that our solar system (that's why they can see other planets exploding in the sky), it's not that far fetched :^)

>If you're looking for a better wage then you might have to start embracing evil. Students at Lehigh University in Pennsylvania worked out how much it would cost to build the Death Star and came up with a figure of $8,100,000,000,000,000 ($8.1 quadrillion!?), which is 13,000 times the world's GDP.

>How the hell did they come up with this though?

>Well the first one was reported to have measured 140km in diameter and they believed that it was made of steel. They then looked at other modern warships and figured they would have a similar density. They calculated that from the iron in the earth, you could make just over 2 billion Death Stars.

>But, before you start getting scared/excited then you need to know that, at today's rate of steel production, it would take 833,315 years to create enough steel to start building.

>Patience you must have.

I'm sure the Star Wars universe has more efficient means of producing steel and such, but even so, it's still an absolutely insane amount of resources.
>>
>>63750467

They were in the same star system. They didn't destroy the planet the protagonists were on because Kylo Ren wanted to retrieve the plans from the droid.
>>
>>63750498

>>
>>63750533
>13000 times the world's GDP

Well the Empire rules an entire galaxy so it's not that much by their standards. Also way WAY better tech and resources.
>>
>>63750534
How convinient
Despite the fact that only Kylo Ren wanted to have that map, while the overacting ginger general (that supervise the weapon) said he would destroy it if possible.
>>
>>63750533

The Empire had the resources of almost the entire galaxy at its disposal, a galaxy in which faster than light travel is as common as planes and boats are on Earth. I don't think it was ever taxing for them, just long. I assume that's why they built the Starkiller on a planet, it looked more like a facility rather than full on space station.

Starkiller was dumb though.
>>
>>63750222
>How does the "shot" manage to reach other far away systems in such a short ammount of time without the use of hyperspace?
I think JJ has no idea how space works.
Same with Star Trek, were Spock was beeing able to visually see his planet beeing destroyed, while beeing on another planet in another system
>>
>>63750222
they used an existing dwarf planet/moon and dug out the core to fit the station
this way they didn't have to artificially build up a complete new station

since it uses solar storms from an existing sun by sucking up the energy (with a black hole probably) there isn't the need for an expensive power generator
>>
>>63750533
There's a problem with this. Here, on Earth, we can only mine iron and other metals/minerals within a certain reach of the surface. That is why mountains and faults are good for mining because they give us better access to the good stuff by exposing it or pushing it up. When you mine asteroids, and there are a LOT of asteroids, with droids on auto-pilot you can mass-farm a fuckton of metals very very cheaply.

A space-faring race should never want for metal.
>>
>>63750603
>Also way WAY better tech and resources
Not really. They have hyperspace drives and intelligent robots, but apart from that, their technology is not really that much better than ours.
They don't even seem to have internet, or any sort of media, for that matter
>>
>>63750222

1: It irked me when it happened but then someone actually mentioned the blast DID go through hyperspace. Even if it didn't look that way at all.

2: The Empire built half a death star in like 4 years after the first one exploded. 30 years for terraforming an existing planet isn't a stretch considering the First Order is clearly not that much weaker than the Empire.

3: The bigger physics fail is how you store and ENTIRE FUCKING STAR inside a cannon without causing a black hole.
>>
>>63750603
GDP doesn't translate directly into government treasuries.
>>
But honestly don't try to make sense of Star Wars.
Instant travel from anywhere in the galaxy to any point, and there's still uncharted parts of it?
That it is possible to carve a machine in a planet in 30 years?
That the clone army, despite fighting a galactic scale war, is composed of only 4 millions members at its peak?
Just turn your brain off

It's suggested that the Empire was pretty centralized with respect to the economy, with high taxing and plenty of nationalized industries.
>>
>>63750723
You could say that about most things that were created in the past, but made to represent the future. Most people either go full retard with what they expect on the future, or base it on current tech. Like how the technology in Prometheus is far more advanced than anything you will see in Alien, which still had CRT screens and whatever else.

They don't even have the fucking Internet in Star Trek. Fuck knows if they even have porn, although I assume there is some smut in holodecks.
>>
>>63750834
Could the Starkiller move? I assume it could because it'd be pretty fucking shit if it couldn't and would only have a finite amount of suns to use up before having to move one. It'd make it far shittier than the Death Star, which could actually go places.

And then there's moving an entire fucking planet FTL. Jesus.

Neutron Stars are small but not past the threshold that creates a true black hole. On a technical perspective there is a world of difference between a Neutron Star and a Black Hole in how they each affect space-time, but from an organic entity's perspective they're both super-dense, only a few kilometers across, and will kill you if you get anywhere near them.

If they were somehow able to launch a bead of neutronium at a star or a planet it should theoretically cause it to collapse into a mini neutron star. That would kinda make sense, the part which doesn't make sense being how the Starkiller itself handles the neutronium. Seriously, that shit is more dangerous than antimatter.

>Not really. They have hyperspace drives and intelligent robots, but apart from that, their technology is not really that much better than ours.

Here's the base mininum of tech strictly necessary to achieve Star Wars feats depicted on screen:

1. Energy generation and storage several orders of magnitude more efficient than nuclear reaction (Death Stars n shit).

2. Forcefields with various properties. Note that blasters and so on most likely also require them - they fire some sort of fairly slow-moving plasma bolts that somehow do not dissipate after leaving a weapon.

3. Construction materials way better than ours (highly non-aerodynamic objects surviving barely-controlled or even entirely uncontrolled orbital reentry).

4. Some means of making massive amounts of heat just fucking disappear (every starship ever + city-planets).

5. Antigravity (about every second vehicle).

6. Super efficient data storage (you can pack Death Star plans in an equivalent of USB stick).

>If they were somehow able to launch a bead of neutronium at a star or a planet it should theoretically cause it to collapse into a mini neutron star.
Maybe in Star Wars magicland, but not according to real physics.

Neutron stars are held together by gravity, not by nuclear forces, which are repulsive between neutrons.

Stars massive enough to be neutron stars don't collapse because of the additional repulsive force of radiation pressure, renewed by the continuing fusion process. The transition to neutron star happens when fusion fuel is exhausted (generally, in one final burst which blows off the outer layers).

If you could somehow instantaneously transport a sample of neutronium to a relatively low-gravity locale such as a planet, it would fly apart instantly.

Reminder: Star Wars is space magicland. Real world physics doesn't apply.

These kinds of questions can be answered in the sequels.

Honestly, I think this is the film we need right now. The prequels all tried to tell a galactic soapopera but just fell flat on its face. JJ wants to tell a smaller story and reassure the fans (and make guaranteed bank)- hence he remade episode 1.

Nothing new here, but plenty of unanswered questions, just like it was supposed to. We have five more Star Wars movies coming up, all the questions will be answered in those

I don't know why you would call neutron degeneracy pressure "radiation pressure", but whatever.

>Reminder: Star Wars is space magicland. Real world physics doesn't apply.

And? The Death Star works because the power source isn't specified. It's a reactor, working with some sort of energy source to provide the beam.

However, a weapon using starts to have problems because many viewers know something about stars and somewhat how they work. It's about suspension of disbelief, and once you pull in a star as a source, then that becomes much harder. If they didn't specify it, these problems would be much less visible.

Jesus Christ what a shitshow.

Lucas is behind this, I fucking know it.

>>63755732
Star wars was never about science, because the very premise of the force is mystical and fantastic.
>>
>>63755596
Small for Star Wars.

Prequels had dozens of world, locations etc. This felt like an overall smaller movie, and at this point having a planet destroying weapon is run of the mill.

I was most impressed by the fact that those spoilers that were floating around months ago were pretty much beat for beat true on every level.

i'll admit that i had big doubts about how authentic those spoilers were, as they read like a fan fic retread of the original New Hope
>>
This death star seemed more hollow than the last one.

i'd have to assume the only road block would be figuring out how to get so close to a star to begin with. then it's basically a case of erecting scaffolding around it. that's all it looked like considering how it toppled so easily

those spoilers where actually better they detailed the ending as luke revealed to rey she was her daughter, and she embraced her destiny as becoming a balance to the force. that was a better ending than this shit.
>>
>>63755848
That's because it was so much less of a presence.

The original blew up a planet which had emotional connections for one of the characters, and it felt like an actual threat, with Kenobi saying how he felt it etc.

This death star was blown up with plans taken from a regular stormtrooper on sewage disposal duty.

It feels really fucking impotent. It destroyed a system we'd never heard of, for some reason, then did nothing but be destroyed. Really bad use of a weapon
>>
If you think about it the first order won.

Just rewatched ROTJ and they have won, defeated Sheev and Vader, destroyed the Death Star and the Imperial fleet.
The Thrawn trilogy had some cringe stuff in it but the depiction of what would happen after Endor was based. Empire driven back, divided by infighting and New Republic takes over.

it's quite likely that they cut it. it may seem better but actually having a big expository dialogue scene at the end of a film is the kiss of death.

the movie is really a trainwreck in artistic terms, even if it has moments where it is entertaining.

>Entire Empire crumbling just because they lost Emperor and Death Star allways seemed prettu dumb desu.
Think back carefully to the original trilogy. It all happened in a span of, probably, less than a decade.

One of the first things we learn about the political situation in Star Wars is that the Emperor has only recently dissolved the Senate. Up until that point, the Imperial military and government were the military and government of the Old Republic. The Rebel Alliance is led by people like galactic Senators, and planetary aristocrats such as Princess Leia. By the end, we learn that the Emperor is an evil sorcerer with mind-control powers.

The Empire wouldn't "crumble" when the evil mind-controller dies, and when an alliance of its old leaders defeats its military. It would come to its senses, and be governed by its senate again, especially with another mind-controlling sorcerer (Luke) working to restore the old order.

He must have been trained with that weapon that the storm trooper he fights with a lightsaber uses. That would explain how he can use the lightsaber to a limited extent.

Actually the Starkiller already existed. It was built by the CiS, and was the prototype for the Death Star.

It was simply modified to target hyperspace points in reverse, ie; pulling with a negative charge instead of a positive one.

If something doesn't follow the rules of story telling, it's not a good story. It's that simple.

If someone gets paid to write a story, the bare minimum should be that the story follows basic logic.

This bugged me too, OP, a lot.

So the Starkiller weapon fires as it was a beam of energy, but when the same "beam" reaches another star system in a matter of seconds, it diverges and starts behaving as if it were a projectile. So what the fuck is it ? I'd get projectiles turning into beams but not the other way around.

And in all seriousness, why the fuck does Kyle-o Ren wear the fucking mask ?

As for Star Wars not being Sci-Fi: You are correct, it has nothing to do with Science Fiction, unless people thing Science Fiction is a setting instead of a genre.

But you really have to understand that if the world you set an adventure/mystery story in has no grounded rules, if it doesn't follow the basic rules of logic, then the adventure/mystery is just broken. The entire concept of adventure and mystery relies on you being able to put yourself in the characters' shoes.
What would YOUR reaction be if someone told you that somehow a renegade imperial faction that only a small fraction of the Republic was dealing with to this point managed to repurpose and entire planet into a functional superweapon that outperforms the Death Star, the single most potent and dangerous weapon in galactic history. And they did this without it becoming public knowledge and a target for everyone.

Your first reaction would probably be that a whole myriad of people managed to fuck up on such a colossal level that it's indescribable, while at the same time, people in the First Order managed to casually out do every military force in recorded history, with limited if not minimal resources, compared to the fucking Empire that had access to literally the entire Galaxy's stockpile on everything and still barely managed those two lesser stations, yet everyone knew about them being constructed since day one, despite the Empire also having total control over everything, so should be the best at keeping secrets.

It shouldn't make sense whatsoever. It should sound like someone's pulling your leg. Your first reaction should be. "Oh fuck off. That's utter bullshit" and go back to your business. Not take up arms to find and destroy it.

The appaerence of this weapon is on the level of someone announcing that Adolf Hitler just showed up with a deathsquad from the past with Die Glocke in tow.

The author is common sense.

No son it's Hollywood.

Notice how all the new remakes of the old stuff are happening?

They just did that to Star Wars and no one noticed.

They literally remade Star Wars Episode 4 named it 7 and said this is years after 6!

So now they get to SJW the cast, they get to design new things to look EXACTLY like old things but slightly different!

It's a masterful deceit!

It's literally Star Trek 2009! They did the same thing. Except in Star Trek they said this is crazy science fiction so we can invent time lines! Old time line is over now boys, we now new time line.

Star Wars doesn't give time lines but it has TIME! So what do we do. We move time forward exactly as many years as the actors aged. BAM new everything. We can cast anyone!

But JJ was like hmmm fans didn't like my Star Trek original plot don't steal.

What will happen when the Dark Side takes over the galaxy? What next?

How will the force play into the movies? What is this awakening? Will there be more Jedi/Sith? Foreshadowing of Great Sith/Jedi factions?

Right now, in the direction that JJ Abrams movie is going, it just seems like they have no clue what the fuck they're doing. They just played it safe so they don't receive the blame when the next Hollywood shill releases the next movie.

https://youtu.be/RiHnqv098LY?t=16m20s

So let's take all the characters

>Rey
Luke was a farmboy coudn't do shit became a pilot did shit. Later master Jedi.
Now Rey can fight, fly and force with no before hand training WHAT SO EVER!
>Maz Kanata
Yoda knew shit about you with the force, this granny can SEE YOUR EYES! Knows everything about you! Also a 1000 years old!
>Supreme Leader Snoke
Emperor was this deformed old man with strong powers. Liked to appear in holorams all the time.
SNOKE IS A 50 METER TALL HOLOGRAM OF A DEFORMED BABY ALIEN IN DARK ROBES
>General Hux
The old guy was not afraid of Vader and only took orders from the Emperor
A super duper cocky I ain't taking your shit general that fighters over Snokes love with Kyle
>Kylo Ren
Anakin was this dark menacing overlord that had no remorse or feelings but after 3 movies turned out to be a conflicted father that had no idea he had 2 kids that were alive.
Kylo Ren is NOW BADASS THAT TURNS INTO A WHINY TEEN with tempper tatrums because hes being pulled back by his love for his parents but he kills he father because EDGE
>BB-8
R2-D2 was this cute robot that had a mission and help in several ways. He is still a robot.
BB-8 is now an super unique one of a kid cute super duper robot that has actual emotions and inteligence and trusts people!
>Poe Dameron
Han solo was a wise cracking take no shit guy, Finn can't fill that role this guy is the new Han Solo and takes no shit from no one.

>Finn
Finn an actually new character wow.

>The entire concept of adventure and mystery relies on you being able to put yourself in the characters' shoes

You seem to have an extremely limited view on this matter. You also continue invoking "basic rules" and "common sense" in lieu of an actual argument.

What are we even arguing about exactly? You're mad because the movie doesn't every single little nitpicky question? You can't fill in the blanks yourself and go with it for the sake of the greater story, which is only beginning to unfold? I mean I'll certainly concede that they could have done a better job making this one more standalone without recycling the superweapon plot or teasing us with obvious shit to come. That mystery box approach really aggravates me. Hackneyed plot convenience? Sure. But I don't think it's some grave violation of the rules of storytelling. Sometimes you just have to go with it for the sake of the greater theme. Hardly a foreign concept for Star Wars.
>>
>>63763645
He wasn't "Uncle Ben", he was "Old Ben Kenobi". He was just some guy Luke knew about, not a close family friend or something.
>>
>>63762008
Rey never talks to Lars San Tekka. The place the first order destroys is not rey's hometown. Luke knew Ben for more than a few hours. We don't know whether or not Snoke is a Sith Lord.
