He kind of was, though. Kenner was selling toys of him well before his screen debut. The Holiday Special's animated segment featured him prominently not to hype Empire (still a year and a half off from that point), but to hype the Boba Fett mail-in promo.
Boba was always positioned to be a popular character, but because he was mainly aimed at children they were the only ones who remembered him (if you just watched the movies, he's entirely forgettable). When the kids grew up, Boba became a "cult favorite" because the average non-fan didn't know who he was.

Boba Fett was instrumental to the whole plot by helping to capture Han Solo & friends.
I was expecting low so I wouldn't be dissapointed, but it was beyond any expectations of dissapointment. Not angry nor sad, it's just the blandest movie i've seen all year.
It's scene per scene, Episode IV with cheese. It wasn't predictable, it was line by line, script per script Episode IV.
It's just meh. Bad. Incredibly "play safe, milk those suckers off nostalgia". It was a meme movie, shoving shit out of nostalgia pandering every detail out of the first. And it got sickening, because it's a souless movie by itself. It's a shadow of another movie, not a remake, not a retelling, not forwarding the story either, nor its own story.
It's a shame, the Dark Side of Disney won.

I think the problem with TFA lies in how many characters they have. You've got 3 "main" characters, 2 sith, multiple high-ranking New Order characters, multiple Resistance characters, and Luke. They didn't have enough time to expand on all of them, and Phasma got pushed out as a result
