I'm definitely looking forward to this one, JJ Abrams played it safe and hasn't done a lot more than callbacks and introducing the new characters and setting.

Agreed. I thought Abrams did a good job in setting up a solid foundation for a revival, but it was derivative. I think they picked their directors as follows:

Episode VIII will be all about expanding rey's flashback. Get prepared for visions everytime she touches luke or other force containing stuff.
