Say what you want about him, but at least he had a creative imagination and was able to come up with new interesting and unique concepts. People trashed things like midichlorians, jar jar, and podracing, but at least they were completely new ideas, not just the exact same plot rehashed. Basically Lucas is the ultimate "ideas guy", he is a factory that pumps out ideas, some great, some terrible. He just sucks at filtering out the bad ideas from the good ones, and is bad in execution. When he has someone to tell him which ideas are good and which are bad, as well as assist in directing, he can produce a masterpiece. When he's all alone with no assistance, is a confused mess. Nevertheless, its still more talent than someone who just rehashes the LITERAL EXACT SAME CONCEPT.

A lot of people mention Ghost In The Shell, which has just enough of sexuality in the mix to draw in the western audience I suppose but I must say that Ghost In The Shell is not even in my top 10 anime, not even close, that's just how deep the world of anime is.
Some anime is so disturbingly mature like Fractale that I wish it would challenge the system and submit it as a Drama category in the Oscars just to bitchslap the snotty Academy.
It's not just the level of maturity and sophistication anime has, it's also quite original, entertaining, and visually fantastic. I would regard anime as the highest form of cinema art-form.
But hey, me preaching about anime won't do you any good, you gotta go out and see it for yourself just how much you are missing.
The recent one I would recommend to check out is Sword Art Online which is light and easy to get into anime for the first time yet appreciate it as much, but if you want the heavy stuff right off the line check out Guilty Crown in which the plot is so complex and twisted that you'll need extra oxygen pumped into your brain in order to comprehend everything, and if you want amazing visuals and a gripping drama that also has awesome mecha battles Aldnoah.Zero is the shit.

I'm not sure how I defended Lucas with that, but sure I'll bite. Fox didn't own Star Wars. They only had the distribution rights to New Hope. They still actually do. Disney can't put out a blu-ray of OT without first making some kind of deal with Fox for New Hope.
As far as the prequels go, Lucas paid for those with his money out of his pocket. They distributed the movies cause the first 3 had that fanfare at the beginning so the next 3 might as well.
The same goes for Indiana Jones. If Spielberg and Lucas decided that New Line should distribute Crystal Skull the could've done it. There was jack shit Paramount could've done about it. The only thing that would be different was there's be no visual gag in regards to the Paramount mountain at the beginning.
So Fox had no creative input on these movies since the start. For New Hope they didn't care cause they thought it was gonna be a minor hit at best and afterwards they had nothing cause Lucas had it in writing that he owns it. It was all part of his get out of the studio system plan. The fire rose and there was nothing any of the Fox executives could do about it excpet poke the plane debris with a stick.
The best they could do for the sequel trilogy is say that they don't want to distribute it, but why would they do that? Even 5% profit of something they didn't have to invest anything into is better than nothing. It was abetter profit margin than they got on a lot of other shit they made.
