Jesus basically started a cult. He was of Jewish ethnicity, sure, but his unique religious beliefs were very far removed from traditional Judaism and he got executed by the Jewish religious authorities for propagating a completely new form of worship.

These are the guys who had Christ crucified (the Romans found Jesus not guilty of sedition, but carried out the execution anyway over fears of mob violence) and mercilessly persecuted Christians for centuries afterward. And you want to know something interesting? They didn't, and don't, follow the Old Testament. The Pharisees had what they called the Oral Torah, a collection of sayings that Moses supposedly handed down to seventy elders on the slopes of Mount Sinai when he received the Ten Commandments. Of course they just made up whatever they wanted, but they didn't even write down this Oral Torah, which they believe supersedes the Old Testament, until centuries after the crucifixion! You can't say that the "Jewish" Pharisee religion was even codified before AD 300. Christianity and the New Testament actaully predate the religion and text today called "Judaism" and the Talmud by three centuries! (Note that Jesus completely rejected the "oral Torah" as a fabrication on the part of the Pharisees. Lord knows how much the Pharisees twisted even that false tradition in the centuries between then and when they bothered to write it down.)
And the religion of today's "Jews" is completely changed from what the Pharisees practiced. There is no Temple anymore. Kabbalah was invented in the Middle Ages. "Judaism" has split into dozens of different sects, some of which even deny the existence of God, others dressing like 17th century Polish businessmen for some reason.
So I ask you, when you say that Jesus was a "Jew", do you really mean that he was a Talmudic Pharisee, like the "Jews" of today? Doesn't such a statement seem a little off to you, given the above?

humans have had rituals/festivities around the end of december to the beginning of january for thousands of years. long before there were even names for the months they were doing it. it all has to do with the sun and it's position in the sky. as we travel around the sun the angle of the sun changes in the sky (earth is titled), that's why we have seasons. the sun reaches it's highest point at point in june, from that point the sun gets lower and lower in the sky until it reaches it's lowest point at the end of december. at that point at the end of december it starts rising again.

December 25th isn't Christ's birthday and it isn't supposed to be. Christ was probably born sometime in September, but we don't know for sure because it isn't stated in the Bible. In the Middle Ages some priest or other decided that they should have a festival celebrating Christ's brith, not his birthday. He picked December 25th because it's the dead of winter and the time when people most need cheering up and hope for the future. Also it was already a festival day in a bunch of pagan cultures because of that same reason. Christianity came to baptize pagans, not exterminate every last remnant of their culture.
