After Clone Wars, and reading the ring theory, I rewatched the prequels and God help me I actually like them. You gotta wince through the cornball shit but they are actually good movies. The Anti-Cheese edits are great, too.
And if the ring theory is correct, Lucas is a fucking genius for managing to make the prequels do what they do and still have a somewhat coherent plot.

Lucas hadn't gotten to the point where people wouldn't criticise his horrible ideas and scriptwriting. He's great at coming up with some fun shit, but he over thinks things and can't write good dialogue to save his life. In the first three that were made he had a team working with him to iron out those kinks. He and James Cameron basically created modern filmmaking. One of the reasons we elderly folk are so mad at the prequels is that Lucas was generally accepted as one of the smartest filmmakers of our time, and the prequels were so apparently halfassed and nonsensical.
But the evidence for the ring theory is pretty clear. The shots in the prequels are often flipped mirror images of the shots in the original movies, while the story beats from each prequel mirror the beats from its twinned original movie, in reverse. Even weirder is that TPM mirrors the shots from ROTJ but the story from ANH, while ROTS mirrors shots from ANH but the story from ROTJ
Lines of dialogue in the prequels are spoken at the same time they are spoken in the original movie.

I know. What Lucas was attempting to do with the prequels was impossible. Instead of just making 3 prequels, he turned all 6 movies into an interlocking epic poem, but in film. It's never been done before. It's even more impressive considering he didn't direct Empire or Jedi.

It's actually pretty amazing that the prequels made as much sense as they did, considering their plot points moved backwards and scenes were shot to mirror scenes, to the second, in the original films. But backwards.
But the prequels are bad, by themselves. He prioritized this massive interlocking structure he had in his head, especially the visual aspects of it, over character and dialogue, and good Lord did we (and he) suffer it.
