The last 2 trek movies were grim and serious mostly. So this is them trying to make star trek fun. The problem is that, we never got a proper serious trek, so this seems really retarded. Pegg is a decent enough writer, and coming off of lindeloff, the master of nonsense, this will probably be the first one to have a plot that actually works and is somewhat original.
Looks like we finally get an away mission, though at the cost of another broken ship yet again, though it just looks broken, not completely decimated, probably because of the klingons.
the white face alien is either completely new, which is honestly fine because trek used to do that all the time, or a re imagining of the black side white side aliens.
this plot also feels like its a classic TOS arena style trail, some alien race has brought all these other races together probably to see what happens when you do, or to test them and see who is the most civilized. Maybe.
I will hold further judgment till trailer 2, the only thing I really hated was the orange and blue color scheme that complete over takes the entire look of the movie.
