The problem is people who were alive during the OT's release are biased towards that particular trilogy and those growing up when the prequels were released have the same biases towards the new trilogy.

I haven't seen a single Abrams film. But I watched little bits of Star Trek on TV. And I kind feel like I know exactly what all his movies are like and why I wouldn't enjoy any of them that much. They seem like entertaining action filled films, but very shallow. Not bad, but not memorable.
I'm glad he brought the dumb action back to Star Wars, because originally it was just a fun action space adventure before it was anything else, which was something that felt absent in the prequels. But I think a lot of what people like about Star Wars is the deeply immersive world that was created in those original films and the really great characters and story. I didn't really feel like abrams would be capable or bothered to do any of that. He was basically only obliged to make another dumb shallow but serviceable action movie that would use the Star Wars IP, all he needed to do is make it not terrible and billions of dollars in profits are guaranteed.
I'm more interested in the spin off movies they are planning, because hopefully they'll leave the creators more room for actual creativity.
