it focuses purely on the importance of family and forgiveness and coming together during the holidays no matter what. And has some of the most powerful catholic imagery ever captured on film in context of the holidays.
if any of you have kids. Have them watch home alone. They will like it for the gags , but watch it with them while looking for what im talking about , and you will instantly realize how powerful the movie is under the surface.
PS home alone remains to be the most successful live action comedy ever made.

Never really thought about it that way but you're right. The reason why Home Alone is good is because the plot isn't really about themes of commercialism or consumerism at all. 90% of christmas movies in some form or another are about "oh no, someone might not get their loot this year." At its core its central theme is forgiveness, and since forgiveness is the central theme of the Christmas story in its entirety (including the crucifixion), that's probably the biggest reason why the movie actually rings true with audiences even to this day.
RIP John Hughes, you were a genius beyond your own time.
