Kirk is not only useless, he actively fuck up. There are two well delivered monologues arguing why he is shitty captain..he just shrugs it off. Towards the end he himself sees how useless he is and has Spock be the captain. And Spock not only proves himself to be better captain, he also ends up being better action hero.
