After watching this trailer it really has become clear how much of a strangle hold Marvel Studios has on the industry.

Bond
Star Trek
bvs

All are poor attempts to copy the Marvel strategy.

At least Karl Urban is still based af.
>>

It was a voice over, it wasn't that character talking. Firstl Elba would never sign up to do this to be hidden behind that much makeup, second that design is way too generic to be the main villain.

Still looking more forward to this than the new Star Wars movie. Then again I've always preferred ST over SW.

Yet I know the new SW movie will be ok, but damn that last prequel just ruined my outlook on it. The new Star Treks were just good fun and made me want to watch TNG over and over.

Yea there's not a ton of space but this looks closer to TOS, not TNG or DS9 or even the original TOS crew movies. It's on colorful alien planets just like the show.

Interaction with other races other than just attacking like they're all violent humans?

In the last movie the interaction with the Klingon was just shooting at each other with the excuse of "high political tension" between the races, but at least we got the interaction with Khan which was more interesting.

This looks like just attacking and getting attacked and running and blowing up shit, which is the only thing that POS FaF director knows how to do.

>$0.25 has been deposited in your account

In no episode of Star Trek is the ship destroyed out of nowhere for the purposes of creating artificial tension. Any time the ship has been destroyed in the films has been, rightly, in the third act of the story.

If you can't understand the very simple parallel between the spaceship in Star Trek exploring the cosmos and an 18th century naval vessel exploring the ocean, and why that's the lynchpin of the franchise's enduring popularity, you may have some form of brain damage. The ship is as much of a character as Kirk, Spock or Bones, it is the vessel that carries the audience into the universe of Star Trek. Destruction of the ship symbolises the end of a journey, not the start of one.

My only hope for this Star Trek now is the new TV series. WELP.
>>
>>63636175
Starting to look like TNG movies.

They should just reboot Star Trek again and this time go full hard scifi. Movies like Gravity and The Martian prove that people are ready for these type of movies.

They should figure out what they're going to do fast, lest they want these movies to get completely lost in the Star Wars resurgence.
>>
>>63636483
He spent half his time on the bridge in TOS, and commanded the ship when everyone else wandered off.

Kirk was the captain and went on every away mission. Don't act like this has ever made sense.

>>63636175
I'm optimistic. Keep in mind this was written by Pegg, who is probably the biggest fan on set. And in the trailer they're going to show the most explosive actiony bits to pull in the crowds.

If they're curious why they're there, my guess is so some mega brain can bet some quatloos on the outcome of a war.

Pretty depressing to think if we had this same attitude towards recognizable properties back in the day TNG would have just been a watered down shitty remake of TOS and Star Trek would have died three decades ago.

Looks alright to me.

Song choice aside, this looks like it's MUCH closer in structure, style, and tone to previous Star Trek films than either of previous two attempts. This new reboot has always been about making a series of big dumb action movies with the Star Trek logo slapped on them, so I see no reason to get upset about them going in a slightly different direction and having some fun with it when we've already had like six years to accept that these movies wouldn't be true Star Trek films. Especially after how fucking dull Into Darkness was, this new lighter tone is refreshing as fuck in comparison.

Star Trek as a film franchise is dead, and we'll never get a true honest to god big budget movie in the vain of the TOS films again. If you think otherwise, you're delusional and have no idea how the industry works. In their place, we'll have mediocre but harmless popcorn flicks that are just serviceable enough to provide some fun little bits of nostalgia wrapped up in an otherwise typical Hollywood blockbuster.

If you don't like it, just don't watch it and pray that the new TV series is good.

Before Lin and Pegg took over wasn't the film going to feature William Shatner and be a celebration of the franchise on its 50th anniversary?

>>
>>63637469
The thing is, in a world lacking Star Wars, Nu-Trek wasn't like Star Trek, but it was the biggest sci-fi property there was at the time outside of the Marvel movies which were barely a franchise yet, so even if we felt "hey this isn't Trek", we'd still begrudgingly watch it because it was at least a fun thing to watch

But now we have a new Star Wars franchise and Marvel and DC shoved down our throats at every opportunity, and they're all kinda similar really. This third Nu-Trek movie is likely just more of what the first two did, but because the franchise landscape has suddenly changed so much, we're all rejecting it outright because we want that classic Trek feel.

They're going to be so confused when it fails.

This fucking notion that you shouldnt enjoy things like this anymore because you reach some arbitrary age is 50s bullshit thinking.

Its no different than some fuck in his mid 60s who is retired yelling at someone in todays world, saying "well sonny, when I was your age I walked into the company, gave the manager a strong and firm handshake and got the job and was assistant manager within a month! Pull yourself up by your bootstraps, sonny!"

Also, him being the guy that literally got a career by making references to so called "nerdy" things (All be it, with MUCH MORE legit work involved as opposed to Felicia "HEE HEE, ILL WAVE MY TITS AND ASS IN EVERYONES FACE WHILE MENTIONING WARCRAFT!" Day), he REALLY has no room to judge.

That's not what he said. He said the nerd movies and shit to have come out recently don't make you think at all. Back when Orci was the writer/director the plan was to team up the young crew with old Kirk/Spock

>In an interview, screenwriter Roberto Orci stated that Star Trek 3 would be more original and wanted the film to stay in the classic Trek world
>The script by original director Roberto Orci was said to bring William Shatner back into the Star Trek universe to reprise his role as Captain James T. Kirk. The script was said to reunite him and Leonard Nimoy on screen…

The script was rewritten however after Orci left and Nimoy died. Now it just seems like a standard Trek movie

Fuck off.

Actually, Roddenberry wanted to reuse alien races as little as possible. TNG+ threw all that shit out of the window and made complex back stories for races that were originally going to be one-offs. He didn't want the messages of the stories being bogged down with all that shit. And here we are. Wanting more.

Yah. You can't just keep bringing everyone back to life. If he doesn't die than he doesn't get his final old-man death victory. Which looks stupid on film, but in reality people don't look that cool when they die usually, so...
>>
>>63638171
Roddenberry said a lot of things, not all of them particularly good ideas.

Shame Roddenberry was the worse thing to happen to Star Trek and literally everyone knows it. There's a reason why TNG, show where he had the most influence, sucked until he died when it then became much, much better.

Well I think he had to go back on some of that, since the second officer was an alien he had to expound on some of it, and he reused klingons a few times. Still, having Cardassians in that time would've been pretty shitty.

I hope their phasers are beams this time instead of bolts of light.

io9's comment on the trailer:

>When Justin Lin signed on to direct the third Star Trek film, Star Trek Beyond, you knew the action was going to be bigger. But in the first trailer for the film, it really does feel like a Star Trek version of the Fast and Furious.

>Pumping the Beastie Boys’ Sabotage (which was also in the first movie), Kirk and his crew seem to have lost the Enterprise and get sent off on an adventure filled with lots of new alien creatures and wanton beaming. No look at Idris Elba’s villain yet (or is there?) but we do get to see Sofia Boutella’s character, who looks like something out of Metal Gear Solid.

>The trailer feels like a perfect, 90 second tease, to let anyone who still feels hurt by Into Darkness know, this franchise is not dead yet. This kind of over-the-top energy is almost the opposite of what Star Trek is known for.

>“I thought about how much a part of my life Star Trek was,” Lin said. “Growing up, my parents had this little fish and chips restaurant in Anaheim in the shadows of Disneyland, and they didn’t close until 9 PM. As a family, we didn’t eat dinner until 10 PM, and we would watch the original Star Trek every night at 11. My dad worked 364 days a year, only took Thanksgiving off, and from age 8 to 18, the only time I could hang out with my parents was by staying late. And every night, it was Star Trek on Channel 13 in L.A. That was my childhood. All my friends were Star Wars kids but I didn’t go to the movies, so I was the Star Trek kid. Thinking about this, it became a very personal and very emotional decision.”
