The no singles policy was a huge overreaction to the James Holmes batman shooting. One theater company started doing it in my area and started a campaign in local media that they were safer because they had bag searches, metal detectors, and the no singles policy so sad lone wolves couldn't cause trouble.
Eventually they dropped the no singles policy because it's fucking retarded but they kept the bag searches and metal detectors. It's fucking bullshit because all the bag searches are for is stopping people from bringing in their own candy (or if you're /tv/, crab legs apparently).
The no singles policy was very real, though short lived, in my area. Like anything else on /tv/ people take everything to the nth degree for the sake of comedic discussion. I'm still waiting on the manlet ban from theaters myself.
