Yesterday I watched a Technicolour movie and it really made me realize the bullshit they add to camera's. Technicolour looked great, red clothes, green leaves, blue sky, yellow sun.
My home video camera or smartphones would record Christmas events etc looking exactly as they did in real life - i'd prefer movies like this. Shaun of the Dead, Trailer park Boys etc. All look real.
But now movies use some dark ass cameras, add some gray ass filters, more gray ass shit, then they highlight all the blue and remove the green colours.
Fincher's shit is always gray and blue.
Nolans shit is always gray and black.
Breaking Bad was ALWAYS fucking orange.
Is there a proper term for this? A new age of cameras?

It was a technique that hid the shitty color response of earlier digital cameras. Nowadays it's just a shitty trend, digital still doesn't have quite the latitude that film did, but they're not even using it anymore.

Color filters used to be hard to implement properly so it was only used when absolutely needed for the artistic vision. Now it only needs a click of a button but seems people are still stuck with the notion it's "artistic". And as an additional bonus it hides mistakes and uniforms the picture so everything can be done even more lazily.
the effects actually look WORSE than 20 years ago because again, they threw out all the amazing modelwork and CGI'd the crap out of everything

The original Thief had a lot of humor in it, and the player character was very sardonic. The reboot is angsty grimdark seriousness.
Tomb Raider was basically Indiana Jones but with a (notoriously well-endowed) woman. The reboot is a super serious and "realistic" origin story for the (now "realistically" proportioned) heroine.
Splinter Cell was a bit like the original Thief, and the reboot from what I hear turned out the same way.
