As annoying as Regina being defanged can get, she's got to be one of the most developed character arcs in television history, because she walked a long road from sadistic mass murderer to living saint onscreen, right before our eyes.
As to the Author story, didn't you notice it was a rehash of Regina's own story in Season 1? He could change events, he could change memories, but he can't fundamentally change who people *are*
