It's based off a '30s comic strip, so right off the bat your thinking Archie and Dennis the Menace, so they got a huge budget at the time, over $20 million and some producers wanted a Star Wars rip-off, but others wanted to do it justice, so between hiring some good actors and Queen probably taking up half the budget, you had to get some bad actors, then add in late 70's special effects (which imo were pretty good) and there you go, director and actors knew it was going to be ridiculous but put so much work in the fucking thing and fuck it lets go full retard.
