Without interesting & dynamic cinematography, I instantly & viscerally hate a movie.

That's why ALL contemporary comedy & horror sucks balls. It's 100% narrative driven, thus instantly forgettable & just a waste of time.

Good cinematography, whether sweeping & grand - subtle & understated - is the most important element to crafting a cinematic legacy.

Principals, score, narrative, set/costumes are all individually important, but the camera-work is what ties it all together. It is quite literally DIMENSION.

this short(ish) film Alan Clarke did for the BBC in the80s utilizes mostly tracking shots. It works for the subject matter, which was just showing the type of randomly targeted shootings that were going on in Northern Ireland at the time, completely devoid of context. Gus Van Sant's 'Elephant' took a lot of inspiration from it.

Ophuls was even more ostentatious in his camera movements than Lubezki, using cranes and dollies in every shot and he did it while making a movie about c͏uckoldry. Plus his American movies were the definition of Hollywood trash for their time (fucking film noir in the 40s, how original). It's obvious you've never seen a single Ophuls movie so why pretend like you have?

Before Uncharted 2 in 2009, nobody would have ever said that about any live-action/practical-effects movie. They aren't even really using CGI except for in the bear attack and a couple other stunts.
It isn't cinema's fault that video games are catching up in visuals and popularity to the point where people are reminded of shit like assassins creed 3 when they see >>63627290

Since everything is virtual in a game, you can see far more crazy shit happening in one than you would ever expect to see in any movie. Thus, having your action scenes described as "looking like a video game" is a fucking compliment for a live action film, at least in the visuals department.

I think that the cinematography under the natural light was big deal in 70s because of mechanics of camera & the sensitivity of an actual film itself. After several decades, we all own the thanks to the advance of technology that the shooting under the natural light has become fairly avoidable task. As you have known, we have digital equipment as well as a film itself gets better than ever. But using a film still comes with a lot of hard work !!!

It follows had fantastic non-meme cinematography that did a really good job of backing up the plot.

I kind of see what OP is saying though, if the cinematographer goes way off the reservation and does things just because they are cool, there is a problem. I don't think that is the case with any of the usual examples here though.

>>63624895
Meme cinematography is a thing. But this isn't it.

If you look at someone like Deakins' entire filmography, that's a pretty clear cut example. You have a big budget DP for hire who will make your film look "good" without any need for the director to have clue what look he's going for. Roger sorts out everything for them and the film will get its oscar nomination. But there's no connect between the film and the presentation.
You get all these masterful, well-composited shots that have no context.
>Long shot at dawn as the silhouettes of the men are lit only by the rising sun
^ It looks cool, but it's not a necessary part of the film at all and adds nothing to the narrative or even the tone that's trying to be set

The revenant however, none of this applies. It's shot in a very specific way to evoke specific moods. I haven't seen it yet, so maybe I'm jumping the gun. But I'm basing this on birdman which perfectly made it seem like you were watching a play in film form

meme cinematography is really the next logical step, unfortunately

for almost 2 decades now story and themes have been increasingly sacrificed for style and visuals, so it would make sense if next reddit tier pretentious but still pandering cinematography that has little/no relation/context to the material, or, alternatively, it becomes the focus/emphasis of the oh so clever director/cinematographer

either way it'll just become more hacky, especially as the gimmicks become more "artistic"
>>
>>63632439
Well, this is a trailer. These are not full scenes.
>>
>>63632373
So what you're implying is that the only meaningful shots are dis positioned to be reused ideas from other directors and a director is unable to make a meaning for themselves from the use of a particular shot? Yes there's guidelines but nobody is bound to them outside of beliefs. I don't disagree that directors use these kinds of shots in order to make a movie seem more meaningful than it really is.

No? Are you talking about directors or DPs?
Either way, cinematography should be a coalition between the director and the DP to present the story in the best way

Pointless shots that only look nice and don't add anything in context are examples of meme cinematography. Deakins is basically just a DP for hire who makes your over-funded film look oscar-worthy
