Scorsese is objectively the best director who ever lived, closely followed by Kubrick

He stopped being good after Goodfellas and started making Oscar bait tripe

>>
>>63613429
>hes so good that he has a very wide appea
It doesn't work that way. The higher the quality the more sophistication it takes to appreciate. Appealing to the masses reveals that the work has a low barrier to entry and thus a low artistic ceiling of quality. Only the few can handle advanced art, if the many are happy then you're peddling pleb fodder.

holy fucking shit, and you're calling other people reddit?
>>
>>63614283
Reddit is the "everybody is invited" circle jerk. /tv/ is elitist. The way any art community should be.

I don't think even Scorcese at his most egoistic would agree for a second. He's a film fan before a filmmaker and he's no illusions of it. He's the archetypal New Hollywood homage artist. He's a Godard, a Tarantino, a Paul Thomas Anderson, -- not bad by any means, and more innovative than most of his ilk, but he makes entertaining love letters to the cinema and little more.
Taxi Driver, Mean Streets, The Last Temptation of Christ - all good movies, but not great.
>>
>>63613097
I love him, but i think he's limited by focussing more on being entertaining than eliciting any real emotional reaction. Especially post-Goodfellas
>>
>>63614336
>/tv/ is elitist

/tv/ isn't elitist, they want to look like patricians watching unknown films, but the truth is that they are too poorly cultured to know these underground films, so they just act contrarian and pretend they like shitty movies that are somewhat deep and complicated according to them, while they are not.

But at last it's entertaining to read.

I get what you're TRYING to say, but you're really comming off as a pretentious twat.

Yes, we know, reddit is garbage normalfag-central, that point has been made so many times.

The thing is, that you mistakenly think that "the appreciation of the masses" inherently makes a movie worse, which is wrong.

Give any person a Kobe steak, and they'll love it, let the chefs and critics appreciate its perfection, but that does not mean that "plebians" are going to enjoy the hell out of it too.

Hope my analogy makes sense
>>
>>63613818
what are you, retarded? literally Hipster- The Post.
andy warhol did shit that was objectively garbage and lele muh post-modernism so nobody would really get it but he was the richest artist ever

2001 is widely considered one of the greatest movies ever, because it is good, not because it's known
>>
>>63614496
>they want to look like patricians watching unknown films
I have to disagree, there are several threads dedicated to unknown films, which are not pretentious or contrarian.

The quality threads should not be overlooked because of the vast amount of pretentious shitposters.

The last 10 minutes of The Departed is completely nonsensical to force the shitty ending.

Kubrick was a fantastic visual director who completely sucked at writing and non-visual story telling which is why he's so divisive.
>>
>>63614529
You post anime. You are fucking degenerate human garbage. People give me shit about being "pretentious" and "elitist" every day here, but it's pretty obvious to see that all of those who disagree with me are already cultural enemies of mine in the first place. The video game players, the anime watchers, the masturbators, the capeshit enablers. If one non-degenerate who has bled for cinema sat down with me and explained why I was wrong then fine, I'd hear him out. But when the demonstrably infantilized get upset and throw memetic buzzowords at me, it's hard to think anything other than "I am doing my job effectively". You are my enemy and I hate you. I hate all other video game playing IMDB sensibility viewers and it's hard for me to even look at you as a human being.

What gives? 4chan has always been a place for people interested in anime, or as some would call them, weebs.

I think it's kind of weird how every board has grown to despise anime, since 4chan's foundation is anime, but this is another discussion not suitable for this place.
>>63614686
You are mistakenly assuming, that the appreciation of foreign films, means that you should restrict your personality and interests.

Pretty ignorant don't you think? To not be able to enjoy what you enjoy, because people will judge you for it.

It has got nothing to do with the enjoyment of others, the very fact that the media in question is able to be "enjoyed" is a criticism inherent to the media in question. A movie could be filled and locked in a bank vault, showed to nobody, it would still be "entertainment" sensibility even if no one else had seen it. It's not that I don't like thinks that people enjoy. It's that I am against things that are constructed to be able to be enjoyed.

Also I don't give any film any extra credit for being "foreign".
>>
>>63614686
>thinking you're part of some form of cultural vanguard
>"IT'S ALL OUT WAR"

Of course you'll get shit for being pretentious (no need for quotes my man), because ultimately, all you are doing is posturing.

You'll get no respect when you obviously lack the passion and only bitterly gripe on an anonymous Japanese image board.

Anyways, you are acting as if there is a metric to art, and while there is certainly technical components that may improve or elevate a work your point falls flat when you act as if there is such a thing as "merit" in art.

>"there is merit in art"

if that were true NO ONE would like capeshit.
>>
>>63615140
>It's not that I don't like that people enjoy other films
>It's that they're made in the first place
>>
Scorsese's strength and weakness is that he's not an auteur. He's a chameleon, that can make many types of pictures in relevance to his interests, and his second to none understanding of cinema history has him mining elements from stuff almost no other director would even consider drawing from, but not one of his films has his "voice" emanating trough it. Even at his most artistic, he's more content in entertaining than elevating the medium in which he's working. And that's fine, but I don't think there's a single picture he's made that you could confidently say couldn't have worked without Scorsese at the helm.
>>
>>63615140
>It's that I am against things that are constructed to be able to be enjoyed
So in summary, anything which can be enjoyed, is inherently worse than something which can only be appreciated through knowledge and insight of the subject?

I am pretty confused in what you're trying to say.
>>
>>63615265
>if that were true NO ONE would like capeshit.
All this proves is that not everybody is equipped to comprehend that merit. Not that it isn't there. People like capeshit because of decades of brainwashing, conditioning society towards desiring the juvenile, the infantilized.
>>
>>63615301
>anything which can be enjoyed, is inherently worse than something which can only be appreciated through knowledge and insight of the subject
In essence, yes.
>>
>>63615379
You know, 4chan is really not suited for these kinds of conversations, as it requires me, and others, to know a lot of what you mean by this to fully comprehend and answer your question.

It's just weird how you came to this conclusion, what do you even mean by "worse"? It's as if you're trying to say that enjoyability is never a factor in judging anything related to entertainment, which is just wrong on so many levels.

Yes and no. The way to get really broad appeal is to make low-brow mediocrity. The way to get kinda broad appeal is to make stuff so good that the enthusiasts won't shut the fuck up about it and will force everyone they know to watch it too.

>>63613097
I recently watched Casino. It felt like the same boring, drawn out shit as Goodfellas and Wolf of Wall Street. James Woods and Sharon Stone carried the movie though, they were great to watch. I only really like Taxi Driver out of all he's done.
