Between Shane and Unforgiven, I'm torn.

I was recommended a few other Westerns in a thread before--
I went into Wild Bunch with high hopes but it was a bore. Stupid plot and it didn't even have a soundtrack or cinematography to fall back on (like the Leone movies)
Pale Rider is cool put is really just a Eastwoodified remake of Shane.
The Outlaw Jose Wales is good up to a point but it feels like it reaches the end...and then keeps going.

While you guys are on the topic of westerns, could you guys help me out with something?

I've been trying to find a movie for quite sometime, and maybe you guys are familiar with it. I watched it a long time ago when I was a kid, and I never knew its title.
It was about a band of cowboys who were on the run from a band of killers. The leader of the killers was a sniper (who had a moustache) who used a precision rifle to shoot down his targets.

The good guys started dying one by one, and there was a nigger among them. By the end, the movie ends with a confrontation between the last man standing and the sharpshooter. Rings any bells?

Oh yeah I really like The Searchers. The only problems that stood out to me were, for one, "Texas" looks nothing like Utah/Arizona. they kept throwing "Texas" all over the place but they are right in the middle of Monument Valley...

The other problem is probably the story is probably actually too dark for the era the movie was made to do justice. It's got that 50s Western shininess to it. Not nearly enough grit, you know? Needs a good remake like True Grit
>>
>>63604542
>the story is probably actually too dark for the era the movie was made to do justice. It's got that 50s Western shininess to it.
For sure. There's a lot of really sloppy tonal shifts between genocidal madman hunting for his kidnapped and raped kin and this tsundere couple horsing around, or the town idiot yucking it up while they realize they've opened themselves to ambush
>needs a good remake
Absolutely fucking not. The Searchers could easily be retold but an outright remake is unnecessary.

William Munny is an amazing character.
Spent the whole movie trying not to be the man he once was but when Ned gets wrongfully tortured and killed, William just says fuck it.

The Duck of Death and Bill parts were good too. A lot of people think those parts are pointless but I can't imagine the movie without them. Bill being a fully realized character just made the final shoot out all the more powerful.

Yeah, the Duck & Bill thing was completely necessary. Like you said, it helped seal that ending better.

There's so many memorable scenes & dialog in this movie I could watch it all day long. It's funny because Eastwood made a living doing unrealistic shootem up westerns, then came back years later to put it to bed & blew it the fuck out in one that was grounded in reality. I almost feel like the genre never really recovered after that.

is the only reason /tv/ doesn't like Django Unchained because of the race part? Because the protag is black?

i thought it was an alright movie, but i didnt like

>the classic Tarantula "half the cast dies in a violence orgy close to the end of the movie even though it was completely avoidable"
>Shultz not shaking his hand just to advance the plot and create the violence orgy
>lack of a developed antagonist in Leo (despite him doing a bretty gud acting job); he was pretty much just MUH EVIL SLAVE OWNER LOOK HOW EVIL I AM...UH CUZ I OWN SLAVES

but other than that I thought it looked good, was acted pretty well, the dialogue was fine, and it had a nice story progression despite the lapse near the end

what are some other valid criticisms you guys have?

Schultz shooting DiCaprio was a mistake , he should have been backstabbed somehow.

He was always thinking and calm in the movie
>>
>>63611206
it's been a long time since I saw it, but didn't they try to buy the wife using that exact reason but got found out?

and about the practicing over the winter thing, didn't shultz say it would be hard to travel/find/track the wife in the winter, so they might as well practice?

I'm not about to watch the whole thing again but just off the top of my head.

Were there any other plot idiocies?

It wasn't. The idea of the "wild west" is mostly a literary invention. That's not to say there wasn't violence, but for instance most towns did not allow people to walk around carrying firearms like in the movies, and even places like Dodge City or tombstone AZ that were hotbeds of violence might have a handful of murders a year, and by handful I mean fewer than five.
