Were the changes made to Star Wars really that bad?
>>
They were completely unnecessary
>>
>>63573921
No. It's just a reddit meme.
>>
There were a lot of changes that cleaned up a lot of the effects that were totally necessary.

It's the insertion of new effects and unnecessary clutter that are terrible.
>>
It's so dense

Yes.

>implying Greedo shooting first doesn't cheapen Han's character arc
>implying that CGI dinosaurs walking in front of the frame isn't distracting as fuck
>implying that a CGI dance number in RotJ isn't retarded
>implying Vader screaming NOOOOOO in RotJ doesn't ruin the scene
>implying Hayden Christensen belongs in these movies

They're objectively inferior versions of the movies
>>
>>63573921
it's gonna be great
>>
Some are good, some are terrible.
>>
Didn't they finally make an unspecialized edition of these movies?
>>

>>
>that part where a cgi thing walks in and all you can see is a low res texture over the whole screen

Bravo Lucas
>>
>>63574061
>Hayden Christensen
His acting was actually pretty good considering the script and the greenscreen shit he had to work with.
>>
>>63573921
It wasn't dense enough. Now the density is just right. There's so much going on.
>>
>>63574126

>>
>>63574159
Yes, but there was no need for him to be in RotJ
>>
Making the picture clearer and cleaner was for the better. Shoving in needless CGI stuff was stupid especially since jabba looked so bad
>>
Most of this board hasn't even seen the originals and their opinions on it are based on what people have told them.
>>
>>63574159

It really wasn't.

No doubt George kept reshooting until his delivery was as shitty as it possibly could be but every line he says is awful.
>>
>>63574132
It was cool in 1997, the first re-release. I think it's because of the sucess of Jurassik Park, Lucas feels obliged to add CGI like his friend Spielberg.

Remember he is jealous of the sucess of others movies

>we're never going to beat Titanic

I think i find the key to all of this.
>>
They mixed in shitty 90s CGI with the practical effects from 77, so it all looks ridiculously out of place.
>>
>>63574159
Hayden Christensen is a terrible actor who's one decent performance was in shattered glass. Where he was playing a person with no emotions, occasionally pretending to have emotions.
>>

This
>>
I'm glad they replaced Yub Nub
>>
>>63574257

>Implying

even if that were true the edits didn't get truly retarded until the 2004 DVD release. The 1998 included some positive changes, like the new music at the end of RoTJ.

Fuck you Yub Nub is shit and doesn't fit the moment at all.
>>
>>63574322
Most egregious of all the changes. Yub Nub is based
>>
>>63573921

George just threw up all over the originals and added clutter to every shot. Totally unnecessary. The biggest problem with the prequels is having a nonsensical story with boring characters and throwing too much shit on the screen. Having alot going on in every shot doesn't make an interesting movie.
>>
The changes were awful
>>
>>63573921
Yeah, that one specifically sucked because it fucked with the flow of that scene by adding clutter and bullshit to it, when it needed none. Also the CGI looked like swinging dicks.
What's with people constantly trying to make excuses for Lucas' bullshit on this board? I mean, it's so easy to shoot down, but you keep trying.

The greatly enhanced picture and audio quality were fantastic, the film's mono or 2 channel audio was enhanced with a more modern 5 channel stereo mix and there were a couple of small clean-up touches like removing obvious matte lines that really helped.

However the special editions were also a testbed for Lucas to CGI VFX tests for the prequels and he also fucked up the academy award winning editing either out of spite for his ex-wife or because he has brain damage.

This. Yub Nub is based because it dials down the celebration to a local one. The Alliance has some breathing room, but it implies that the fight is not yet over.

All of the added celebration scenes are awful. How would they even know right then? Why would Tattooine even give a fuck? Wouldn't everyone on Coruscant be worried? Bespin might have reason to celebrate, but they're likely still under heavy occupation. And fuck the additional addition of Naboo.

This is one of the worst offenders, literally how did R2 get in there
>>
>>63573921
The editing that made the image clearer was great, and there are a few subtle background changes that I liked. But I don't like where they seemed to try to stuff every frame with a ton of added special effects like pic related. The addition to CGI creatures and moving things break any connection with the film. I can't focus on what's happening because I can tell the CGI doesn't work with the film that was made long before it existed.

Lots of scenes don't work at all, like making Greedo shoot first, Han literally calling Jabba a human being because the scene was originally had a human as Jabba (the scene being included is also retarded because it repeats dialogue already given with the Greedo scene and was deleted for a reason), R2 hiding behind space between rocks that would have been impossible for him to get in, the musical number in Jabba's palace, etc.

The best improvement they made was the ending to Return of the Jedi, replacing the music and adding scenes of different places in the galaxy cheering. It worked, helped the movie feel move complete.

Jabba was originally supposed to be a human. They shot this scene back when the movie was made, but they cut it because it fucks with the pacing and is completely unnecessary.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cw1gkNd6Z_8

Do NOT believe Lucas' story on this scene. He claims that Jabba was always meant to be an alien, but there is ample evidence to disprove that. Lucas is a notorious liar when it comes to the history of Star Wars.

This was a deleted scene they lacked the tech for. Pretty bad and unnecessary, yeah. There were good changes, of course, but mostly I don't see the point.

Like the Jabba scene in ANH. It ruined Jabba's mystique until his reveal as a fat slug in ROTJ, plus it's redundant as fuck. Everything we needed to know, we could take away from the Greedo scene.

But I liked the minor changes made, like new shots for the Death Star assault at the end, and most of the stuff in Empire Strikes Back. And fuck Yub Nub.

But that doesn't excuse the horrible, pointless shit he added.

I could go down the list, but New Hope had the most offending changes and additions.
Stuff like the Jabba scene, which for the audience is just repeating already delivered information from the Greedo scene, and just extra fluff.
Then there is stuff like the dewbacks and CGI stuff added in the Mos Eisley scenes, including a dewback walking in front of the shot for a few seconds, effectively blocking the scene.
Greedo shooting first undermines Han's character arc and that sequence
Replacing the practical halloween mask costumes with CGI aliens made the cantina crowd look less intimidating, and thus ruined the atmosphere of that scene.

Honestly, Empire Strikes Back is the only special edition worth watching. Outside of Luke screaming as he falls, and us getting a clear shot of the Wampa, everything in ESB 90s Special Edition was an improvement. The Battle of Hoth got some much needed touch up, and the opening of the windows and extending the flight sequence into Cloud City really made that whole city feel as grand and alive as Lucas wanted us to see in the original.

RotJ's biggest offending touch up was adding the bulb in the center of the Sarlaac Pit, and changing the Hutt Palace Band to a CGI dance number.

I won't touch the Blu-Rays, since most of the changes there were even worse.

But when Lucas had more creative control in Return of the Jedi, he was like "I'm gonna do Jabba my way!!" and then we got fat slug Jabba and all the other faggotry that permeates the first 30 minutes of that movie.
>>
>>63576455
That was the 2004 edition, not the 1997 edition.
Like I said, worst offending change in 1997 was the addition of Luke screaming as he fell.
The Wampa scene is a hit or miss.
>>

only thing worthwhile about cgi star wars is the outrider flying out. everything else is either lame cgi or just outright crazy stupid shit
>>

That's the point? No one who was born after 1983 watched original versions of original trilogy in a theater, and if they saw them on home video, it was on Laserdisc at best.
>>
>>63576299
the old cantina scene was so fucking cool. that one creature that was completely in the shadows, except 2 red dots watching them.

and spoiling Jabba before ROTJ was just dumb.

the creature blocking the scene is the most heinous of them all. I can't imagine the thought process behind it.

>>

Yep it;s true. The stormtroopers boarding the Tantive IV is still my favorite scene of all time. Still have the original action figures that I replayed the scene over and over with. When Battlefront 2 came out and I could actually play the battle... it was a religious experience. People really don't realize just how much those films changed things.

The only good addition is the Outrider taking off in the first shot in Mos Eisley

>tfw dash rendar is still canon
>>
>>63574680

When I was little I was obsessed with Jabba's palace. I remember seeing the special editions in theaters, and excusing the awful A New Hope scene because they were stuck within the confines of the deleted scene.

But I had the Star Wars insider magazine, and it talked about how for Return of the Jedi they were shooting new material for Jabba's Palace. All the old creatures! The Jabba puppet! Even the actress who played Oola was back, and she looked exactly the same in make-up! What could go wrong?

And then it happened. I saw it in theaters, and when that scene started, I felt uncomfortable. I had cold sweats. At that moment, I wanted to be anywhere but in that theater. It was a dark portent of the shit to come.
>>
I liked most of the changes desu. 90% of them you don't even notice, like recompositing all the model shots so they don't have those weird black bluescreen borders around them. Going to digital matting made all the original VFX shots look 1000% better, because they lost those black borders.

The CG Death Star battle scenes were great, the Battle of Hoth was improved vastly, Cloud City looked amazing, etc. Revoicing Boba Fett with Jango's actor was inspired. I even liked the expanded Mos Eisley and I don't get all butthurt over the 2 seconds a space lizard walked across the frame. I even though the blinking Ewoks were a nice touch.

That said, Han shooting first and the ROTJ musical number and Vader's NOOOOOO were pure fucking cringe.

To be entirely honest, I sincerely feel that if they re released these with cg Redone by weta to be on par with modern films, that the additions made would be good, if not superior.

Depends on the changes. I never minded making Mos Eisley and Cloud City more lively (though the lizard walking across the screen as wipe was awkward) or increasing the size of the Imperial patrol looking for the droids or the touching up to the X-Wings approaching the Death Star, showing celebrations across the galaxy at the end of Jedi, those all worked.

Greedo shooting (fuck first, at all), the re-insertion of the Jabba scene, Luke screaming as he fell at Bespin and inserting Hayden Christensen as Anakin at the end of Jedi, those were all very bad ideas.

As someone who was too young to remember anything prior to the prequels, was the OT originally numbered 4-6, with the idea being that there would later be prequels? Or were the episode numbers tacked onto the movies when the PT was announced?

>Were the changes made to Star Wars really that bad?

Yes and no.

Some changes were actually fine. These typically included small touch-ups or fixes (such as the Imperial offices wearing their medals upside down, for example).

However, a number of these "cosmetic" changes are harmful as they either use effects that also became dated or were just bad ideas (new musical number in ROTJ).

Any narrative change was an absolute disaster:
>Greedo shooting first
>Changing Boba Fett's voice
>Replacing Sebastian Shaw with Hayden Christensen
>"NOOO" to ROTJ
