Well, there was a lot of exaggerated gossip stories as well. They weren't that close on set, but that isn't really a problem. I think it was more because Lyle was doing other things at the time, if I remember correctly he was even running for office one time. Their schedules didn't often match. Which is probably why there are some episodes in later seasons where he is more active and has more scenes with her than in earlier episodes.
In any case I think they had chemistry on screen, even in the last season
