such a ridiculous plot hole. The whole way that HAL was managed just required so much suspension of disbelief.

To be fair, without shortcuts the show would have been painfully boring. I imagine a sentient AI that actually wanted to rid humans from its vicinity would be extremely efficient and its ploy undetectable.
