I enjoy the series, but I can't help but wonder if I'd still enjoy it as much if it wasn't for the fact that every actor is famous or from a series I enjoyed before.

I think a lot of it was rebound. Critics only reviewed based on the first four episodes of Season 1, so it got like a 70 or so. Then it turned out to be pretty decent, so when Season 2 came about, they overcorrected.

I think that even the "entertainment" show with the greatest ever, acting, cinematography, strongest tension, most engaging plotline and characters you get most invested in, will still never compare to an art show.
This is just like Breaking Bad again (pre season 5 self destruction). I can recongize it as very well made entertainment but it's never going anywhere near the The Wire or the Sopranos.
