It's a real improvement. Godzilla's a primordial creature - not particularly intelligent, with poor vision, etc. My ideal version is almost embryonic, like Godzilla never really finished gestating but somehow just skipped a step and grew to enormous size. Like, rather than reaching an 'adult' stage, his skin simply calcified and began accumulating scars and gouges, giving him that rough-hewn appearance.
A lot of the past designs have leaned towards serpentine and/or feline features, which makes him look rather calculatedly evil. Although you obviously need the saurian features, I see Godzilla more as a shark, a sperm whale, and a stout dog.
There seems to be a lot of dank meme potential in Godzilla. Where have our meme excavators been?

I really liked Evangelion's angels, or most of them at least. They're terrifying due to their extreme abstraction in designs and behavior alone. Gainax, Anno and co did a great job of nailing aliens that literally nailed the term in terms of presentation and tone.
