If you ignore the coda and the Crimson King, just focus on those last few pages, the ending to the series is fantastic. Roland gets to enter the Tower, Susannah gets a fresh start with the man she loves. Then King has to ruin everything by showing what's inside the tower and what awaits Roland at the top, which ruins the whole "it's the journey not the destination" thing that both he and Robert Browning were going for.

This doesn't even concern me. What concerns me is: how the hell are they going to do the saga as is, when you consider Book 4 and how that movie will be completely different from the rest in terms of cast and setting (in Roland's past, when he was 14 so different actor, etc.)
And it is not as if they can just omit the events of Book 4, since those are the pivotal moments that end up shaping Roland into the man he will become. (not to mention the fact that they could make a good 2 movies focused just on the Roland/Cuthbert/Alain-era ka tet)

I love Elba, Stringer Bell is one of my favorite performances of all time.
I hate the Detta/Odetta stuff so if this cuts down on it all the better. Besides, considering her relationship with Eddie, they can cover any of the racial issues there.
What I don't like is that by making Roland's actor black you now need to make at least 2 other massively important parts black- Roland's father and young Roland. And while Elba is a fantastic actor, there's literally no one I can think of with the chops to be a decent young black Roland, or another black actor with MORE power than Elba to be his father. All the Star Wars memes aside, I think Boyega's a good actor in Attack the Block, I like Michael B Jordan, but neither one of them has Young Roland about them, but you can bet your ass if this comes to pass they will be at the top of the discussion. Dark Tower would be incredibly difficult to cast as is, but cutting the pool of actors down to 5% of hollywood vs 60% of actors cripples you into hiring people that are just black vs finding the perfect person for the part.

The ideal way to handle this is somewhat already covered in the books, but basically you just split the narrative LOST style between flashbacks and the present. Between all the material of Young Roland in books 1, 4, and 5 you can easily stretch that narrative to be doled out more or less in equal parts as the main events, and have important moments be mirrored or paid off with accurate timing.
However, this probably won't happen, and given their current plans of Movie- Tv show- Movie- tv show- Movie it should basically go with the movies being the present day and the two tv shows being Young Roland adventures with little fireside wraparounds of the main cast. Have the first season be Roland in Gilead, the stuff with Cort and his father and flagg, and the second season be the stuff with his gang and Susan from Wizard and glass. This is the easiest way to make things happen, as you can have the movies make sense (not really, but this is how it will be pitched) without all the backstory, it keeps the casts separate, etc.

The mirage like start, the story of 19 in the town, the encounter with the speaking demon, and elements of the palaver at the end are all added or changed. 20 years of waiting for The Beast and finding out a year before that they edited the beast out.
