I don't think he's very good. I've only seen a little of what he's done, but it's not very good. His material is very preachy, but devoid of jokes. He's not quite on Bill Maher's level (who shouldn't be called a comedian ever, the guy doesn't tell jokes at all), but he's close.
Guy gets applause because he says the right political message to the right crowd. This is the easiest sort of applause you can get as long as you don't really care about what you're saying and are willing to say whatever so long as it pleases your audience.
